Getting to Si Phan Don (4000 Islands)
There is no airport at the 4000 Islands. Everyone arrives by road or river. The standard route for backpackers is overland from Pakse, which has the nearest airport with regular flights from Vientiane, Bangkok, and Siem Reap.
From Pakse to Don Det
Pakse is the gateway city. From the Southern Bus Terminal, minivans to Nakasang village leave throughout the morning, roughly every 30 to 60 minutes between 07:00 and 14:00. Travellers arriving from elsewhere in Southeast Asia often compare this transfer to the Bali airport to city center route in length and complexity. From Vientiane to Don Det
The cheapest option is the sleeper bus from Vientiane’s Northern Bus Terminal to Pakse. Lao Express, PVO, and several smaller operators run overnight services. Buses leave between 19:00 and 21:00 and arrive in Pakse between 06:00 and 08:00. Fare is ₹992 (~230,000 LAK or ~$10.29) for a 3-berth sleeper, less for a reclining seat.
From Pakse Bus Terminal, walk across the street to the Southern Bus Terminal and catch the next minivan to Nakasang. There is no direct bus from Vientiane to Don Det. The total journey is 14 to 16 hours door to door, and most travellers split it with a night in Pakse.

Getting Around Don Det and Don Khon
Don Det and Don Khon are connected by a 1.6-kilometre stretch of single dirt road that crosses the old French railway bridge over the Mekong. This is the only road connection between the two inhabited islands. The rest of transport within Si Phan Don is either bicycle, motorbike, boat, or tuk-tuk on the mainland side at Nakasang.
Walking Across the Railway Bridge
The bridge linking Don Det and Don Khon is the cheapest and most-used crossing. Walking takes 15 to 20 minutes and costs nothing. The bridge is concrete, has handrails, and is safe in daylight. Travellers report feeling nervous because there are large gaps between the rails and the river is wide below, but no falls have been reported in recent traveller feedback.
If you arrive late at night, take a motorbike taxi instead. The bridge is unlit and the surface is uneven.
Motorbike Rental

Where to Eat on Don Det

Reverse the inbound route. Take a boat back to Nakasang, then a minivan to Pakse. The first boat leaves Don Det around 06:30, and minivans start leaving Nakasang around 07:00. Border Crossing to Cambodia at Trapeang Kreal
