How to Get There (From Hanoi)
Cat Ba is the same trip from Hanoi every backpacker takes. You have two routes, and one of them is bleeding money.
Route 1 (recommended): Hanoi → Cat Ba via Hai Phong. The hike to Ngu Lam Peak from the village entrance is 6km round-trip through jungle; the summit viewpoint looks back over the karst valley. 2. Paying 300,000+ VND for a one-way taxi from the ferry to your hostel. Cat Ba town is walkable from the ferry terminal. Use Grab if it’s running; otherwise walk. The island’s shuttle bus between town and the national park entrance is ₹184 (~50,000 VND or ~$1.91), not 200,000.
3. Skipping travel insurance. Cat Ba has jungle trekking, motorbike rentals, and water sports. A single medical evac from Lan Ha Bay to Hanoi is ~₹192,963 (~2,000 USD)+. Not worth rolling the dice to save ₹600 (~$6.22) a month.

Is Cat Ba safe for solo Indian women? The hostel area is well-trafficked and lit at night, and police presence at the ferry terminal is constant. The bigger risks are the usual: drinking too much at the pool bars, and missed ferries back to Hanoi on weekends.
