Laos Visa on Arrival for Indians: Fees, Documents & How to Apply (2026)

✅ Last verified on-the-ground: 2026-06-26

This guide was rebuilt after a VoA application at Wattay Airport in June 2026, and cross-checked against the current Laos Immigration fee schedule and the laoevisa.gov.la portal. Below is the full procedure, plus extensions and overland crossing tips. For related planning, see Sea Backpacking Hub.

Subodh’s Pro Tip: If you’re flying into Vientiane or Luang Prabang, the e-visa is almost always easier than VoA, no queue, no cash prep, no photo hunt. The full e-visa walkthrough is in Laos e-Visa Application for Indians. Use VoA when you’re crossing a land border that doesn’t accept e-visas, or when you decide last-minute.

Visa Types Compared

Visa on Arrival (VoA), what this guide covers

The default route for Indian passport holders. You walk up to the VoA counter at the airport or land border, fill a short application slip, hand over your passport plus the fee, and get your passport stamped within 10 to 20 minutes on a quiet day, up to 45 minutes if a tour bus arrives at the same time. Single entry, 30 days maximum stay, ₹2,890 (~30 USD) fee paid in cash (USD or Thai baht at most crossings). Available at Vientiane Wattay Airport (VTE), Luang Prabang International Airport (LPQ), Pakse Airport (PKZ), and the major land borders: Friendship Bridge (Vientiane/Nong Khai), Huay Xai/Chiangkhong, and the Cambodia crossing at Voen Kham/Dom Kralor. The Mekong slow boat landing at Huay Xai also has VoA counters, but the morning rush from the boat is when the queue is longest.

e-Visa, apply online before flying

Apply on the official portal laoevisa.gov.la, around ₹2,408 (~25 USD) for Indian passport holders, processed in 3 business days. Same 30-day single-entry stay. The benefit is avoiding the on-arrival queue and the cash-prep hassle, especially if you’re flying into Vientiane or Luang Prabang. The catch: e-visas are not accepted at every land border, so if you’re crossing overland from Thailand, VoA is often your only option. Detailed step-by-step is in Laos e-Visa Application for Indians.

Visa exemption, when Indians skip both

Laos does not offer visa-free entry to Indian passport holders as a baseline rule. The only exemption is for travellers transiting through Vientiane Airport on the same day, where a small transit window may apply, but this is not a usable visa for tourism. If you’re seeing articles claiming “visa-free Laos for Indians,” those are outdated or confusing Laos with Thailand or Indonesia. Don’t risk the flight on that advice. The Laos Visa-Free Transit Rules for Indians page covers the narrow transit exception separately.

Step-by-Step: How to Apply for Laos VoA

The procedure is the same at every port of entry, with minor variations in fee payment currencies.

Before you fly (drive)

  1. Passport validity: at least 6 months from your date of entry. Border officers check this first. Travellers report being turned away at the 5-month mark in practice, even though the rule says 6 months.
  2. Two passport photos: standard 4×6 cm or 3.5×4.5 cm, white background, no glasses, no hat. Some counters accept 2×2 inch as well. Photocopies or printouts from your phone don’t work. If you forget, there’s a photo service outside the arrival hall for a few dollars, but it’s a hassle.
  3. Exact USD cash: ₹2,890 (~30 USD) per person, in clean, unfolded bills. Some counters at the Friendship Bridge prefer Thai baht. If your USD bills have any tear or marking, the teller may refuse them. Bring ₹3,372 (~35 USD) per person just to be safe.
  4. Hotel name and address for the first night, even if it’s just a hostel booking. Officers occasionally ask.
  5. Proof of onward travel: a flight out of Laos or a bus ticket to Thailand/Vietnam/Cambodia. A printed screenshot is fine.

At the airport

  1. Land, walk to arrivals. Don’t queue at the main immigration line; you’ll see a separate counter marked “Visa on Arrival” or “VOA” before you reach the regular desks.
  2. Hand over documents: passport, photos, application form (filled on the spot, English is fine), and the fee. At Vientiane, you’ll often be directed to a bank window first to pay, then return with the receipt.
  3. Wait 10 to 20 minutes for processing. At Luang Prabang on a busy afternoon, it can run to 30 minutes.
  4. Collect passport, proceed to immigration. The regular officer now stamps you in for 30 days.

At a land border (Friendship Bridge, Huay Xai, etc.)

  1. Locate the VoA desk before the Thai exit stamp, or after the Lao entry checkpoint depending on the crossing. At the Friendship Bridge (Nong Khai to Vientiane), you get your Thai exit stamp first, walk across, then the VoA counter is the first desk on the Lao side.
  2. Pay in Thai baht or USD at most crossings. In USD it’s ₹2,890 (~30 USD). Local LAK is generally not accepted at VoA counters.
  3. Same passport, photos, and onward ticket requirement as the airport.

At the Airport / Border: What Indian Travellers Report

Reports from travellers suggest officers may stamp for the stated stay or default to 14 days; stating your full intended stay is the safer move. Answer with the actual number of nights, not vague phrases. If you say “two weeks,” you get stamped for 14 days. If you say “I don’t know,” the officer stamps you for 14 days by default to be safe. Travellers who wanted the full 30 days and got only 14 have lost two weeks of trip because they were vague at the desk.

The second most common stop is proof of onward travel. Have the bus or flight ticket printed or on your phone, ready to show. Returning to your home country counts (a Delhi-Bangkok-Vientiane ticket with a Vientiane-Bangkok-Delhi return is fine).

Photo requirements vary: at Wattay Airport, 4×6 cm is standard; at Friendship Bridge, 3.5×4.5 cm or 2×2 inch works. If you’re carrying both sizes, you’re covered. No glasses, no headwear except religious coverings, white background.

Minimum passport validity is technically 6 months but in practice, 5 months and 29 days may slip through and 5 months may get rejected. Don’t risk it.

Land border vs airport difference is mostly fee currency. Airports accept USD cleanly. Friendship Bridge and Huay Xai accept Thai baht at roughly 35 THB per USD, so budget about 1,050 THB for the 30 USD fee. At remote crossings like the Cambodia border at Voen Kham, USD cash is mandatory; no cards, no baht.

Extensions & Overstay

If 30 days isn’t enough, you can extend at the Immigration Department in Vientiane, located on Phon Kheng Road, near the Mekong riverside. The standard extension is 30 more days for a flat fee of roughly ₹2,119 (~22 USD), paid in LAK at the office. Start the process at least 5 business days before your visa expires.

The full extension procedure, including the exact office hours and what documents to bring, is in Laos Visa Extension & Overstay Fines Guide.

Overstay fines: ₹963 (~10 USD) per day, charged at the border when you leave. Overstaying more than a few days can trigger additional scrutiny or a re-entry ban, though enforcement varies. Don’t test it. If you’re cutting it close, head to Vientiane and extend before the stamp expires.

Common Mistakes & Rejection Reasons

  1. Carrying torn or marked USD bills. The counter teller at Wattay rejected a ₹9,634 (~100 USD) bill with a tiny ink mark on it and the traveller had to run to an ATM outside the airport. Carry ₹2,890 (~30 USD) in small, crisp bills.
  2. Forgetting photos. The “photo service” guy outside VoA counters charges a few dollars for two prints, but the real cost is the queue, not the fee. Bring two photos per person.
  3. Aadhaar name mismatch. Your Aadhaar card, passport, and visa application form must all carry the same spelling of your name, in the same order (first/middle/last). Indians whose Aadhaar uses an initial-only format sometimes hit issues. Use your passport name everywhere.
  4. No onward ticket. Border officers at Friendship Bridge have turned back travellers with no proof of leaving Laos within 30 days. A screenshot of a bus booking is sufficient.
  5. Applying for e-visa and then asking for VoA at the border. If your e-visa was denied, you can still apply for VoA on arrival, but if your e-visa is approved, you cannot apply for VoA instead. Either commit to one path or the other before you fly.
  6. Trying to use Lao kip (LAK) to pay. VoA counters don’t accept LAK. USD or Thai baht only.

Getting Connected

The moment you clear immigration, you’ll want data working for Grab, Google Maps, and your hotel confirmation. The cheapest physical SIM at Wattay Airport is the Unitel tourist SIM at the Unitel counter just outside the arrivals hall: ₹107 (~25,000 LAK or ~$1.11) for 15 GB of data, valid 7 days. This is among the cheapest tourist SIM prices in Southeast Asia.

If you’d rather not queue at the airport counter, Get Nomad eSIM and activate it before you fly, so you’re online the moment you land, no paperwork, no passport handover at a SIM kiosk.

FAQ

Do Indians need a visa for Laos? Yes. Indian passport holders must get either a visa on arrival (₹2,890 (~30 USD), 30 days) or an e-visa (apply online at laoevisa.gov.la, 3 business days). There is no visa-free entry for Indian tourists.

Can I get Laos visa on arrival with an Indian passport? Yes. The 30-day VoA is available to Indian passport holders at Vientiane, Luang Prabang, and Pakse airports, plus major land borders including Friendship Bridge, Huay Xai, and Voen Kham (Cambodia crossing).

How much cash should I carry for the VoA fee? ₹2,890 (~30 USD) per person in clean bills, plus another ₹482 (~5 USD) buffer in case the counter charges an admin fee. At the Thai land borders, you can pay in Thai baht instead, around 1,050 THB.

How many blank pages do I need in my passport for the Laos VoA? At least one full blank page, ideally two. Some officers stamp a VoA sticker on a separate page from the entry stamp, which uses a second page.

Can I extend my Laos visa if I want to stay longer than 30 days? Yes, at the Immigration Department in Vientiane (Phon Kheng Road). Apply at least 5 business days before expiry. Fee is roughly ₹2,119 (~22 USD) for a 30-day extension.

Is the Laos e-visa better than VoA for Indians? If you’re flying into Vientiane or Luang Prabang, yes, no cash prep, no photo, no queue. If you’re crossing a land border from Thailand, VoA is usually your only option since some crossings don’t accept e-visas. Both give the same 30 days, single entry.

What happens if I overstay my Laos visa? The fine is ₹963 (~10 USD) per day, collected when you leave. Longer overstays can trigger re-entry bans or detention at the border. Extend in Vientiane before your stamp expires.

Subodh’s Take

If you’re flying into Laos and you’ve planned more than 48 hours ahead, get the e-visa. The VoA isn’t difficult, but it’s an unnecessary point of friction when you’ve got a ₹2,890 (~30 USD) cash requirement, two photos, and a 20-minute queue to deal with after a 5-hour flight. The one case where VoA still beats e-visa is the land border from Thailand, where e-visas aren’t always honoured, and you’ve decided last-minute. Carry exact USD in small bills, two photos per person, and your onward bus ticket, and the process is smooth.
