Backpacker Packing Tips

  • The magic 7kg rule: Pack to 6.5 kg so you always pass carry-on checks with room to spare.
  • Wear heavy items: Put on your boots and heaviest jacket before going through security. They can't weigh what you're wearing.
  • Decant your liquids: Transfer to 100ml bottles. Use solid toiletries (shampoo bars, solid sunscreen) to save weight and space.
  • 40L bags win: A 40L pack almost always qualifies as cabin baggage. Go bigger and you start paying.
  • Weigh at home: Weigh your bag before leaving. Airport scales are precise and gate staff have no mercy.

Baggage Fee Hack

For budget carriers (AirAsia, VietJet, Scoot): always add checked baggage at the time of booking, not at the airport.

Airport baggage fee = 2× to 4× online price.

If you're light-packing a 30-day trip, you may not need checked baggage at all — just ship home anything you buy.

Budget Airline Reality
