Scam Defense Blueprint

  • No Official "Stamp Fees": Laos and Vietnam border officers sometimes demand a $2 to $5 USD "processing/stamp fee" on weekends or late hours. If they ask, politely ask for a printed receipt. They often wave you through.
  • Keep Bills Pristine: Lao and Cambodian immigration will flat out reject US Dollar bills that have tiny tears, folds, stamps, or markings. Keep your USD bills flat in a clean envelope.
  • Conductor Scams: On buses between Vietnam and Cambodia, the bus conductor will ask for all passports and $35 ($30 visa + $5 bribe) to speed up immigration. If you refuse, they might leave you behind. Agreeing is often a $5 tax for convenience, but you *can* do it yourself if you walk fast.
