Weather Truths

• Burning Season (March - April): Farmers in Northern Thailand, Laos, and Northern Myanmar burn agricultural stubble. Chiang Mai often becomes the most polluted city on earth during this window. Head to Southern Thailand or Vietnam instead.
• What is the Monsoon really? Do not think it rains 24 hours straight during monsoon season. It usually means a clear sunny morning, followed by a heavy 1-hour downpour at 4 PM, and a clear evening. It's totally backpackable and hotels are 50% cheaper!
• Typhoons (August - September): Beware of the Central and Northern Vietnamese coast (Da Nang, Hanoi, Halong Bay) in late summer, as tropical typhoons can cancel all boat and cruise operations.

Monsoon Perks 🌧️

Monsoon ≠ ruined trip. Here’s why smart backpackers travel in the rain:

• Waterfalls in full flow: Kuang Si (Laos), Tad Fane, Erawan — all are at peak power during June–Sept. Dry season is a trickle. Monsoon is a roar.
• 50% cheaper everywhere: Hostel dorm that costs ₹1,200 in Dec? It’s ₹600 in July. Restaurants are half-empty. You negotiate better prices.
• Rain lasts 1–2 hours: Mornings are usually sunny. A downpour hits at 4 PM for 90 minutes. Then clear skies. Carry a poncho and keep going.
• Lush green landscapes: Rice terraces in Sapa, Ha Giang Loop, Vang Vieng — everything is vivid, dramatic, and photogenic. Dry season looks parched.
• No crowds: Angkor Wat in July has 20% of the peak season crowd. You get Bayon Temple to yourself at sunrise.
