One of the two best months for the region. Thailand, Vietnam south, Cambodia, Laos, and the Philippines are all in dry season. Bali is in monsoon, but it’s the soft kind: short afternoon showers, still good for Ubud and Canggu.
- Go for: full Thailand loop, Vietnam south to north, Cambodia (Angkor without the dust storms), Philippines island-hopping.
- Avoid: Bali outdoor plans (rain is heavy in the Bukit peninsula), and Tet prep in Vietnam (prices climb from mid-January).
- Crowds: high. Book Bangkok and Hanoi hostels two weeks ahead.
February

Still excellent across mainland SEA. The heat starts building in Thailand (Bangkok hits 38°C), but the islands stay breezy. Bali’s shoulder season begins: prices drop, rain is patchy.

- Avoid: northern Thailand late March onward (burning season starts, Chiang Mai air quality crashes).
April
The peak of dry heat across the continent. Bangkok, Phnom Penh, and Yangon are punishing. Bali enters proper dry season. Philippines is at its hottest. Songkran in Thailand (April 13-15) is loud, wet, and worth it if you’ve never done it.
- Go for: Bali (Bukit peninsula is now dry), Komodo and Flores boat trips, Koh Lanta, Philippines beaches.

The shoulder month. Thailand starts getting afternoon storms, the Andaman coast (Krabi, Phuket) starts its monsoon. Bali is at its best. Vietnam south is still dry. Prices start dropping.

June
Low season across most of mainland SEA. It’s the cheapest month, hostels drop rates, and the major sights (Angkor, Luang Prabang, Bangkok) are uncrowded. Rain comes in heavy bursts, then clears. Vietnam north starts getting hot.

- Skip: sailing trips, island-hopping, and diving on the Andaman.

July
Indonesia’s high season kicks in. Bali, Lombok, and the Gili Islands are dry, warm, and crowded with Australian school holiday traffic. Vietnam north is hot, central Vietnam is dry (Hoi An is a good pick), Thailand is in monsoon but the Gulf coast (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao) is still fine.
