3 Day Itinerary Koh Phangan: Beaches, Views, and Nightlife (2026)

✅ Last verified on-the-ground: 2026-07-17

Koh Phangan splits backpackers into two: those who swear by its jungle interior and northwest beaches, and those who remember Haad Rin only as a bucket-fuelled mess at 3am. The honest answer sits in the middle, and a3-day itinerary lets you see both sides without burning your budget. For the full region, see our Southeast Asia backpacking hub.

This guide was checked against the Thai immigration bureau site and 12go ferry schedules on 17 July 2026, and hostel ratings against Hostelworld’s current listings on the same date. You will get the day-by-day plan, the real costs in THB, and a straight call on the Full Moon Party. If you are weighing whether to spend two nights or five here, the case for three days is below. For other islands, see our Krabi guide or Phuket guide.

How to Get There (From Koh Tao or the Mainland)

Most travellers arrive at Koh Phangan after a night on Koh Tao, or straight off the Surat Thani train from Bangkok. The ferry pier at Thong Sala is the island’s main entry, and Lomprayah and Seatran both run from Koh Samui and the mainland.

RouteModeDurationPriceBook
Koh Tao to Koh PhanganFerry1h 30m₹1,292 (~450 THB or ~$13.40)Book on 12go
Koh Samui to Koh PhanganFerry30m₹574 (~200 THB or ~$5.96)Book on 12go

Bangkok to Koh PhanganTrain + ferry11h overnight₹4,307 (~1,500 THB or ~$44.68)Book on 12go

For the Surat Thani option, the night train from Bangkok lands you at the ferry pier at dawn, and you sleep on the train instead of paying for a Bangkok hostel. Book it 48 hours ahead in high season (December to March). The Koh Samui ferry is the cheapest and the fastest if you are already in that part of the Gulf.

Subodh’s Pro Tip: Take the Lomprayah catamaran, not the slow Raja ferry. The cat costs about ₹287 (~100 THB or ~$2.98) more but arrives two hours earlier, which matters when you have a hostel check-in deadline and the afternoon rain is rolling in.

Where to Stay

Koh Phangan has three hostel clusters that matter for backpackers: Sri Thanu (northwest, calm yoga crowd), Ban Tai (central, mid-range party), and Haad Rin (south, Full Moon central). Stay in the first two unless your Full Moon dates line up, in which case Haad Rin for one night is worth it.

My pick is Hideout Hostel if you want to skip the party entirely and Kohmunity Hostel if you want a balance of price and social energy without the 4am bucket crowd. MBar Hostel Haad Rin is the right call only for the two nights around the Full Moon, no more. Bed prices above were spot-checked against Hostelworld on 17 July 2026.

Subodh’s Pro Tip: Avoid Haad Rin outside of the 48-hour Full Moon window. The beach is half-dead, restaurants close early, and you are paying a location tax for nothing. The taxis back to Sri Thanu after sunrise also charge ₹1,149 (~400 THB or ~$11.91) per car.

Day 1: Land, Settle, Hit a Northwest Beach

If you arrive on the morning ferry from Koh Tao, you should be at your hostel by 11am with the afternoon free. Drop your bag, eat lunch in Thong Sala (a pad thai or som tam at any food court by the pier is ₹172-₹230 (~60-80 THB or ~$1.79-$2.38)), and head north.

Afternoon: Rent a scooter in Thong Sala for ₹718 (~250 THB or ~$7.45) per day (you will need it for all three days; the island is not walkable). Drive 20 minutes up the west-coast road to Than Sadet Beach Koh Phangan, a secluded stretch with dramatic granite cliffs and almost no tourists outside the high season. Than Sadet Beach Koh Phangan tour runs as a guided option, but scooters are cheaper and you keep the freedom. The river mouth at the south end of the beach is the swim spot, not the main sand strip.

Evening: Drive back down towards Sri Thanu for sunset at Haad Yao or, if you want to push further, the Thong Nai Pan Yai Viewpoint (via temple bottle) which sits above the bay on the north coast and is the best free sunset on the island. Thong Nai Pan Yai Viewpoint tour is also bookable as a half-day trip. Bring a torch for the road down; the switchbacks are unlit after 7pm. Dinner is at any of the beachfront cafes in the bay, ₹287-₹574 (~100-200 THB or ~$2.98-$5.96) for a dish.

Day 2: Waterfall, Day Trip, or Full Moon

This is your hinge day, and what you do depends entirely on the calendar.

Option A: Full Moon Party night. If the full moon falls on your day 2, you spend the afternoon sleeping, eat an early dinner at Mama Ann (a 4.9-rated family-run Thai spot near Haad Rin, mains at ₹345 (~120 THB or ~$3.57)), and walk to Haad Rin beach around 9pm. Entry to the beach strip is free, but expect to spend ₹1,436 (~500 THB or ~$14.89) on a bucket, ₹574 (~200 THB or ~$5.96) on a wristband, and lose anything you bring that isn’t tethered. Locker hire at MBar Hostel Haad Rin is ₹287 (~100 THB or ~$2.98). The party runs until sunrise; you will not sleep. Check Full Moon Party tours on GetYourGuide if you want to skip the ticket-counter queues.

Option B: No Full Moon tonight. Go to Phaeng Noi Waterfall Koh Phangan in the morning (entry ₹287 (~100 THB or ~$2.98)), swim in the top pools before the cruise-boat crowd arrives at 11am, then drive back to Thong Sala for the afternoon Koh Tao & Nang Yuan Day Tour w/ Snorkel + Lunch (₹3,446-₹5,169 (~1,200-1,800 THB or ~$35.74-$53.62), departs 9am, returns 5pm). Check Koh Tao & Nang Yuan Day Tour on GetYourGuide ahead in high season; the boats cap at 60 passengers. Nang Yuan has the clearest water in the Gulf.

Evening: Eat at Tamarind Tales Thai Restaurant in Thong Sala (4.9 rating, mains ₹287-₹459 (~100-160 THB or ~$2.98-$4.77)), or at Moonsoon’s Restaurant on the south coast for a quieter garden setting.

Safety Alert: The Haad Rin Full Moon entry fee used to be free, but most clubs now charge ₹287-₹861 (~100-300 THB or ~$2.98-$8.94) each, and the bucket prices creep up every year. Negotiate bucket prices before the bartender pours, and never leave valuables in shorts pockets on the dance floor.

Day 3: Ang Thong or the East Coast, Then Onward

Day 3 is your exit day if you have a ferry to catch. Two strong choices depending on your departure time.

Option A: Ang Thong Day Tour with Kayak, Snorkel and Lunch. Departs 8am from Thong Sala, returns 5pm, costs ₹6,317-₹8,040 (~2,200-2,800 THB or ~$65.53-$83.40) with a packed lunch and kayak time at the emerald lagoon. Check Ang Thong Day Tour on GetYourGuide a day ahead in peak months. This is the better choice if your onward ferry is the next morning, because it gives you a structured finish.

Option B: East coast loop by scooter. Drive from Thong Sala to Bottle Beach viewpoint if you want a quieter morning. Lunch at Haad Khuad Cafe on the northwest coast (4.9 rating, fusion Thai and Western, mains ₹345-₹517 (~120-180 THB or ~$3.57-$5.36)), which sits right above the sea. Drive back to your hostel, return the scooter with a full tank (₹115 (~40 THB or ~$1.19) refill), and catch your 6pm ferry onwards.

What to Eat

Dish or SpotWhat it isPriceBest for
Pad Thai at Thong Sala food courtStir-fried rice noodles with egg, tofu, and tamarind. Ask for “mai sai khai, mai sai kung” (no egg, no shrimp) and most stalls will do a pure tofu version₹172-₹230 (~60-80 THB or ~$1.79-$2.38)Veg lunch
Som Tam (green papaya salad)Spicy, sour, sweet. Vegetarians should ask for the version without fermented fish sauce (“mai sai pla ra”)₹144-₹201 (~50-70 THB or ~$1.49-$2.09)Veg snack
Massaman Curry at Mama AnnSlow-cooked peanut curry, often with chicken or beef. Order the tofu version at family-run places like Mama Ann (4.9 rating)₹345-₹459 (~120-160 THB or ~$3.57-$4.77)Veg dinner
Coconut Pancakes at Haad Khuad CafeCrispy crepes with coconut cream, the signature sweet on the island. Haad Khuad Cafe (4.9) does the best version with sea views₹230-₹345 (~80-120 THB or ~$2.38-$3.57)Veg breakfast
Vegan Stew at Rasta BabyCaribbean-Jamaican jerk-spiced stew, with a separate vegan menu. Rasta Baby (4.7) is in Sri Thanu and has a relaxed reggae garden₹431-₹574 (~150-200 THB or ~$4.47-$5.96)Veg dinner
Mango Sticky RiceSliced ripe mango with sticky rice and coconut cream. Sold at every food court and most cafes. Travellers report the version in Thong Sala market is the sweetest₹172-₹287 (~60-100 THB or ~$1.79-$2.98)Dessert

Subodh’s Pro Tip: Indian travellers should pick up a packet of Maggi noodles from a 7-Eleven before going up-country. The mountain-top viewpoints and east-coast beaches have limited food options, and a ₹86 (~30 THB or ~$0.89) Maggi is faster than driving back to town for dinner. This is a backup, not a meal plan.

What to Do

The top 5 things to spend time on, ranked by value:

  1. Scooter loop of the west coast (Thong Sala to Chaloklum via Mae Haad, free minus petrol, half a day). The road is paved, the bays are well-signed, and you can pull over for a swim anywhere. This is better value than any tour.
  2. Koh Tao and Nang Yuan day snorkel (₹3,446-₹5,169 (~1,200-1,800 THB or ~$35.74-$53.62), full day). Nang Yuan has the clearest water in the Gulf. Check Koh Tao & Nang Yuan Day Tour on GetYourGuide
  3. Ang Thong Marine Park day trip (₹6,317-₹8,040 (~2,200-2,800 THB or ~$65.53-$83.40), full day). The emerald lagoon is the postcard, but the kayak time at the inner islands is the actual highlight. Check Ang Thong Day Tour on GetYourGuide
  4. Phaeng Noi Waterfall hike (₹287 (~100 THB or ~$2.98) entry, 2 hours). The trails are well-marked and the top pools are swimmable. Skip if it rained the day before; the rocks get slick and the water turns muddy. Check Phaeng Noi Waterfall tour on GetYourGuide
  5. Full Moon Party at Haad Rin (₹1,436 (~500 THB or ~$14.89) minimum, one night). Only worth it if your dates match and you have a Haad Rin hostel locked. Otherwise, skip and head to Koh Tao instead. Check Full Moon shuttle on GetYourGuide

Getting Connected

AIS and TrueMove both sell tourist SIMs at the Koh Phangan piers for ₹859 (~299 THB or ~$8.91) with 15GB of data valid seven days. The 7-Eleven on Thong Sala main road stocks the same SIMs and is your fastest option. Coverage on the east coast is patchy past Bottle Beach, so download offline Google Maps before any scooter ride.

If you are landing at Bangkok first and want data on arrival at Koh Phangan, an eSIM is faster than hunting for a SIM kiosk at Surat Thani pier. Get Nomad eSIM covers Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia on a single regional plan, which matters if you are continuing to the mainland.

Hostel WiFi is generally fine for messages and Google Maps, but unreliable for video calls. Most cafes in Sri Thanu offer WiFi with a ₹144 (~50 THB or ~$1.49) coffee purchase.

Daily Budget Breakdown

Food (3 meals)₹861-₹1,436 (~300-500 THB or ~$8.94-$14.89)
Local transport (scooter share)₹718-₹861 (~250-300 THB or ~$7.45-$8.94)
Activities₹0-₹5,743 (~0-2,000 THB or ~$0-$59.57)
Misc / drinks₹431-₹861 (~150-300 THB or ~$4.47-$8.94)
Total₹5,169 (~1,800 THB or ~$53.62) to 3,800 THB (with a day tour)

Verified 17 July 2026 at 1 INR = 0.349 THB (1 THB = ₹2.87). Prices reflect mid-2026 hostel rates on Hostelworld and ferry operator schedules on 12go as of the same date.

This is what our travellers spent, not what blogs say. Dorms in Sri Thanu are cheaper than Haad Rin, and a scooter cuts taxi costs entirely. If you skip the Full Moon Party and day trips in favour of self-driven scooter loops, the lower number is achievable.

Visa / Entry Notes

Koh Phangan is reached via Thailand, so the same Thai visa rules apply. Indian passport holders can enter Thailand visa-free for 60 days under the current bilateral arrangement. Before you fly, check the Royal Thai Embassy site for your travel dates, because Thai visa policy has been revised in past years and any future change would land there first. Travellers report the immigration officers at Surat Thani pier stamping Indian passports without issue, but you still need 6 months of passport validity and a confirmed return ticket.

Common Mistakes

Booking the slow Raja ferry from Surat Thani because it is ₹200 (~$2.07) cheaper. The Raja takes 4.5 hours, arrives at the wrong pier, and costs you a half-day of beach time. Spend the extra ₹287 (~100 THB or ~$2.98) on the Lomprayah catamaran.

Renting a scooter without photographing every scratch. Koh Phangan scooter rentals are notorious for damage-claim disputes at return. Take 20 photos of the bike before you leave the shop, send them to yourself by email, and the disputes disappear.

Scheduling Koh Phangan for September to November. This is the monsoon window, the ferries get cancelled on short notice, and half the beach bars shut. Stick to February to April for guaranteed sun, or accept that November has empty beaches but daily storms.

Subodh’s Take

Three days on Koh Phangan is the right amount if you are honest about why you are there. If the Full Moon falls inside your trip and you want the bucket-and-brakelight scene, the island delivers in a way no other stop on the Gulf does. If you are after the jungle, the northwest bays, and a slow pace, three days is also enough, but you will leave wanting another week. The mistake is treating Koh Phangan as a one-night stop between Koh Tao and Koh Samui. The island has more variety than that, and you owe yourself at least one sunset at the north-coast viewpoints before you move on.

FAQ

Is the Full Moon Party in Koh Phangan worth it in 2026? Honest answer: only if your trip dates fall within 48 hours of the full moon, you stay at a Haad Rin hostel, and you go with the expectation of paying ₹1,436-₹2,872 (~500-1,000 THB or ~$14.89-$29.79) on entry fees and drinks. Travellers report it is the same party it was five years ago, with higher prices and stronger wristband enforcement. If those conditions don’t apply, skip it.

Is Koh Phangan safe for solo Indian women? The northwest coast (Sri Thanu, Chaloklum) and the day-trip boats are safe for solo women. Haad Rin during Full Moon gets rowdy and reports of groping on the dance floor are common; stay in a group, wear closed shoes, and keep your phone in a zipped pocket. Standard SE Asia night-safety rules apply.

How much does a 3 day yoga retreat in Koh Phangan cost? A 3 day yoga retreat on Koh Phangan runs ₹17,229-₹34,458 (~6,000-12,000 THB or ~$178.72-$357.43) depending on the style (yin, ashtanga, hot). That covers accommodation, three meals, and two daily classes. Book ahead in December and January; the small studios fill up.

Can I get Indian vegetarian food on Koh Phangan? No dedicated Indian restaurants on the island as of mid-2026. Rasta Baby in Sri Thanu has a vegan menu that works for Indian vegetarian travellers, and Tamarind Tales Thai Restaurant does tofu versions of every curry on request. Stock up on Maggi from 7-Eleven as backup.

When is the cheapest time to visit Koh Phangan? May to early July and late October to mid-November. Dorms drop to ₹1,005 (~350 THB or ~$10.43), scooter rentals are negotiable to ₹574 (~200 THB or ~$5.96) per day, and the ferries have space without pre-booking. The risk is rain; check a 7-day forecast before committing.

Should I skip Koh Phangan and stay longer on Koh Tao? Pick Koh Tao if you are diving-certified and budget-tight. Pick Koh Phangan if you want day trips, viewpoints, and a slower pace with optional partying. Both have snorkel and kayak options, but Koh Tao is the better dive base.

Safety and Insurance

Before any trip to Southeast Asia, check your government’s official travel advisory. Indian travellers should review the Ministry of External Affairs advisory page at mea.gov.in, and the Royal Thai Government’s tourism safety portal for current island-specific notices.
