- Booking Borobudur “sunrise” through a hostel without checking the actual sunrise window. Some hostels sell a 4 AM departure for the 6:30 AM slot, which is fine, but others sell a “Borobudur sunrise” tour that arrives after sunrise and uses the daytime ticket. Ask which slot you’re getting.
- Driving a scooter to Merapi yourself. The jeep drivers know the lava trails; the public road to the viewpoint is a different, less interesting route. Pay for the jeep.
- Exchanging money at Adisucipto airport. The bureau rate is 5-7% below the city rate. Use a city money changer in Malioboro or Prawirotaman, or just withdraw from an ATM with a forex card (Niyo, Fi, or Forex card through HDFC).
