Bali vs Lombok vs Gili Islands: Which is the Best Indonesian Escape for Indians? (2026)
✅ Last verified on-the-ground: 2026-07-22
Three islands, one flight from Singapore, with different trips. Our SEA backpacking hub maps the full nine-country route, but these three are the Indonesian core. Bali is the polished, traffic-jammed, beach-club-ready workhorse.

The Vibe in One Sentence Each
Bali is a fully built-out tourist economy. Canggu and Seminyak run on Australian freelancers, Ubud runs on yoga retreats and influencers, Kuta runs on package tourists. You will never be bored, never be alone, and almost never be surprised. The food scene is broad (Indonesian, Japanese, vegan, Mexican, Indian). Alcohol flows freely at beach clubs and warung-style bars, except on Nyepi, the Day of Silence, when everything closes for 24 hours.
Lombok is what backpackers said Bali was in 2008. Wide empty beaches on the south coast (Kuta Lombok, not to be confused with Kuta Bali), surf at Desert Point and Gerupuk, and a more conservative Muslim culture than Bali. Pork and alcohol are available in tourist pockets but not everywhere. It is quieter, cheaper, and more dramatic (Mount Rinjani, the third-tallest volcano in Indonesia).
Gili Islands (Gili Trawangan, Gili Air, Gili Meno) are car-free, motorbike-free, and increasingly tourist-built. Gili T is the party one with dive schools and a sunset swing strip. Gili Air is the couples-and-families one. Gili Meno is the quietest, a honeymoon reef. Alcohol is available at beach bars; pork is patchy because the islands lean toward seafood and Indonesian staples.

Bali vs Lombok for Honeymoon: Honest Take
For honeymooners, Bali wins on villa infrastructure.
If “honeymoon” means a private pool villa with a butler and a sunset Kecak dance, Bali wins. Seminyak and Ubud have hundreds of these, and the price-quality is better than Lombok’s equivalent inventory. If “honeymoon” means a cliffside villa overlooking empty surf with nobody for 200 metres in either direction, Lombok wins, especially the Selong Selo area near Kuta Lombok and the barefoot-luxury lodges near Sire Beach. If “honeymoon” means reef snorkeling off your bungalow porch with no engine noise anywhere, the Gilis win, especially Gili Air. Gili Meno is the most romantic if absolute quiet is the brief, but it is also the one with the fewest food options.
For most Indian honeymooners coming for 5-7 nights, my honest call: do 3 nights Ubud/Seminyak in Bali and 2-3 nights on Gili Air. Lombok needs a full week to feel right and a scooter tolerance that not every honeymooner has.
Is Gili Trawangan Better Than Bali for a Chill Vacation?
Gili Trawangan is better than Bali for a chill vacation if your definition of “chill” includes no vehicles, sunset swings, dive shops every 50 metres, and a small enough island that you walk it end to end in 90 minutes. It is worse than Bali if your definition includes a deep food scene, real shopping, day trips to temples, and reliable wifi. Bali has a 4G signal in almost every cafe. The Gilis have 4G near the harbour and the main strip, then patchy 3G or nothing once you walk inland.
For most Indian travelers doing 7-10 days in Indonesia, the answer is: do not pick one. Bali is the entry, Lombok is the adventure, the Gilis are the reset. Three nights each is the format that works, with a fast ferry or short flight between. See our Indonesia 1-week itinerary for how to structure it.
Food and Dietary Considerations (the Angle Most Blogs Skip)
This is the section that decides the trip for many Indian travelers, so it deserves more than a footnote.
Bali is the most relaxed for Indian dietary needs. Hindu-majority Bali serves pork widely (babi guling, the famous spit-roasted pig, is a Balinese specialty and a reason some travelers avoid certain warungs) but is also full of explicitly veg and vegan restaurants, especially in Ubud and Canggu. Indian restaurants exist in Seminyak, Canggu, and Ubud. Alcohol is everywhere: beach clubs, warungs, even warungs in the paddy fields sell Bintang. The catch: pork is on most local menus, so if you’re vegetarian and sensitive about cross-contamination or even just reading the menu, stick to marked veg places.
Lombok is Muslim-majority and conservative. Pork is rare outside a handful of tourist warungs in Kuta Lombok and Senggigi. Alcohol is available but limited: you’ll find it in tourist restaurants and a few beach bars, not at random street warungs. Halal food is the default, which is good news for travelers who only eat halal, and limiting if you wanted to try babi guling-style local pork dishes (there isn’t an equivalent; Sasak cuisine is more chicken, fish, and beef rendang). For Indian vegetarians, Lombok is workable but you will eat at your hotel or limited tourist-warung options more than you’d like.
Gili Islands follow the Lombok curve, but with a tourist bubble on top. Pork is patchy (mostly on Gili T, where there are BBQ joints catering to Westerners). Alcohol flows at the beach bars. Vegetarian options exist at most restaurants because the clientele demands them. Indian restaurants on the Gilis: effectively none. Strict-veg travelers should plan to base themselves in Bali and day-trip, or stock up at minimarkets before ferrying over.
The pattern that works for Indian vegetarians and vegans across all three: stay in Ubud or Canggu in Bali for the Indian restaurant density, take day trips to the temples and rice terraces, then fly or ferry out for the adventure side. Our full Indonesia vegetarian food guide has restaurant names and area-by-area breakdowns.
Where to Stay
| Hostel / Guesthouse | Cost/night | Vibe | Book Here |
|---|
Subodh’s pick: if it’s your first time in Indonesia, base yourself in Ubud for 3 nights, then ferry to Gili Air for 3 nights. Skip Lombok unless you’ve already done Bali twice or you’re specifically chasing Desert Point surf or Mount Rinjani.
How to Get There (From Singapore or Bangkok)
Most Indian backpackers reach Bali via a direct flight from Indian metros to Ngurah Rai (DPS). Onward to Lombok or the Gilis, the two real options are:
| Route | Mode | Duration | Cost | Booking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bali (Denpasar) → Gili Trawangan | Fast ferry (Eka Jaya, BlueWater, Gili Getaway) | 1.5-2 hrs | ₹806-₹1,343 (~150,000-250,000 IDR or ~$8.35-$13.91) | Book on 12go |
| Bali (Denpasar) → Lombok (Mataram) | Fast ferry or 25-min flight | 1.5-2.5 hrs or 25 min flight | ₹806-₹1,182 (~150,000-220,000 IDR or ~$8.35-$12.24) ferry / ₹1,880-₹3,760 (~350,000-700,000 IDR or ~$19.48-$38.96) flight | Book on 12go |
| Gili T → Lombok (Bangsal) | Local boat | 15-20 min | ₹107-₹269 (~20,000-50,000 IDR or ~$1.11-$2.78) | Walk-up at the harbour |
| Lombok → Gili T | Fast ferry from Bangsal | 30-45 min | ₹537-₹806 (~100,000-150,000 IDR or ~$5.57-$8.35) | Book on 12go |
The 12go fast-ferry routes lock in your seat the day before. Walk-up ferries to the Gilis in peak season (July, August, December) sell out by 9am at Padang Bai. Pre-book. Our Bali to Gili ferry guide and Bali to Lombok fast boat review have full schedules and operator ratings.
What to Eat
Across all three islands, the staple dishes are nasi goreng (fried rice, ₹134 (~25,000 IDR or ~$1.39)), mie goreng (fried noodles, ₹107 (~20,000 IDR or ~$1.11)), gado-gado (peanut-sauce vegetable salad, often vegetarian, ₹107-₹161 (~20,000-30,000 IDR or ~$1.11-$1.67)), and sate (skewered meat, mostly chicken or beef). Bali adds babi guling and bebek betutu (slow-cooked duck). Lombok has ayam taliwang (spicy grilled chicken) and plecing kangkung (water spinach in chili-shrimp paste, ask for no shrimp paste if you’re vegetarian).
Strict-veg travelers: gado-gado without the egg and shrimp crackers is the most reliable veg dish across the archipelago. Nasi campur lets you pick your sides, so ask for “tanpa daging, tanpa ikan” (no meat, no fish) and you’ll get rice, veg, peanut sauce, and a fried egg at most warungs. For the full rundown by region, see our Indonesia food guide.
Alcohol is widely available in Bali (Bintang beer at warungs from ₹134-₹215 (~25,000-40,000 IDR or ~$1.39-$2.23), cocktails at beach clubs from ₹537 (~100,000 IDR or ~$5.57)). Lombok and the Gilis charge more because of import logistics, and you’ll see cocktails at ₹645-₹806 (~120,000-150,000 IDR or ~$6.68-$8.35) for the same drink. Wine is expensive across all three islands because Indonesia taxes it heavily.
What to Do
Bali:
- Uluwatu Temple and Kecak sunset dance. Cliffside Hindu temple with a sunset fire dance; entry is ₹269 (~50,000 IDR or ~$2.78), dance viewing area is free but a separate Kecak ticket (~150,000 IDR) gets you a seat. Allow 3 hours including the traffic to get there.
- Tegallalang Rice Terraces near Ubud. Free in principle but the local landowners collect ₹81-₹134 (~15,000-25,000 IDR or ~$0.83-$1.39) at the swing cafes. Go at 7am to beat the tour buses.
Lombok:
- Kuta Lombok beaches (Selong Belanak, Mawun, Tanjung Aan). Free, scooters are 70,000 IDR/day.
- Sasak village visits around Sukarara for traditional weaving. ₹107-₹269 (~20,000-50,000 IDR or ~$1.11-$2.78) donation.
Gili Islands:
- Snorkel trip to the Gili Meno underwater statue. ₹537-₹806 (~100,000-150,000 IDR or ~$5.57-$8.35) for a shared boat with mask and fins.
- Sunset swing photos on Gili T. The famous swings are at beach bars; a drink purchase gets you the swing for sunset, no separate fee.
Getting Connected
Telkomsel is the only Indonesian network worth considering for travelers. Their 7-day tourist SIM with ~15GB data runs ₹269 (~50,000 IDR or ~$2.78) and is sold at Ngurah Rai airport on arrival, at any GraPARI shop, and at Indomaret convenience stores. Activate it at the airport and you’re online before the Grab pickup.
For travelers who don’t want to swap physical SIMs, Get Nomad eSIM is the easier route. You install the eSIM profile before you fly, land online, and skip the airport SIM queue. Our full Indonesia SIM card comparison covers Telkomsel vs XL vs IM3 pricing and coverage.
⚠️ WiFi note: Bali cafes and hostels have reliable wifi. Lombok south-coast cafes are hit-or-miss. Gili Meno has the patchiest wifi of all three islands; if you’re working remotely, Gili T or Gili Air are safer.
Daily Budget Breakdown
| Category | Bali (IDR) | Lombok (IDR) | Gili Islands (IDR) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dorm bed | 80,000-140,000 | 80,000-150,000 | 100,000-200,000 |
| Food (3 meals) | 75,000-120,000 | 60,000-100,000 | 90,000-150,000 |
| Local transport | 30,000-80,000 | 50,000-100,000 | 20,000-50,000 |
| Activities | 50,000-150,000 | 50,000-200,000 | 100,000-200,000 |
| Misc / drinks | 50,000-150,000 | 50,000-100,000 | 80,000-150,000 |
| Total | 285,000-640,000 | 290,000-650,000 | 390,000-750,000 |
Lombok is the same or slightly less. The Gilis run 15-25% more on everything because of import costs.
Visa / Entry Notes
Indian passport holders get a 30-day Visa on Arrival (VoA) at Ngurah Rai (DPS) for ₹3,379 (~35 USD), extendable once at the local immigration office for another 30 days.
| Step | What you need |
|---|---|
| Passport validity | 6 months beyond entry date |
| VoA fee | ₹3,379 (~35 USD) cash (some counters take card, USD preferred) |
| Tourism levy (Bali only) | ₹806 (~150,000 IDR or ~$8.35) per person, paid at a separate counter after immigration, since February 2024 |
| Return ticket | Required |
| Hotel booking | Required (first night minimum is enough) |
⚠️ The Bali tourism levy of ₹806 (~150,000 IDR or ~$8.35) is separate from the ₹3,379 (~35 USD) VoA. Don’t confuse the two. The levy counter is after you clear immigration but before you exit the airport. Full step-by-step in our Bali visa on arrival guide.
Common Mistakes
- Trying to do Bali in 3 days. You need 5 nights minimum to feel the island without rushing Canggu, Ubud, and Uluwatu. If you have 7 nights total, do Bali only. If you have 10-14 nights, add Lombok or the Gilis.
- Booking ferries the same day in peak season. July, August, and December sailings to Gili T sell out by midmorning. Book on 12go at least 24 hours ahead.
- Driving a scooter in Canggu without a license. The Bali police do scooter checks at the main intersections and fine unlicensed riders ₹2,686 (~500,000 IDR or ~$27.83) plus the scooter rental deposit. Use Grab or Gojek instead.
- Showing up in Lombok expecting Bali-style food. Sasak cuisine is its own thing. Bring snacks or do a day trip from Bali if the food variety matters to you.
Safety Notes
Indonesia is generally safe for Indian travelers. Petty theft (scooter bag-snatching in Canggu) is the main risk and is avoidable with a crossbody bag worn on the inside of the sidewalk. The conservative Muslim culture in Lombok means dress modestly outside the resort pockets: shoulders and knees covered for women in villages and mosques. Bali is much more relaxed on dress.
⚠️ Travel advisories change. Before you fly, check the Indian MEA advisory page at mea.gov.in and the Indonesian government’s official tourism advisory site. Generic regional tensions (around Mount Rinjani seismic activity, for example) have caused temporary park closures in past years; a current check takes 2 minutes.
Subodh’s Take
Bali is the answer for most first-time Indian visitors because the food works, the SIM works, the language fallback works (every warung has someone who speaks English), and there’s an Indian restaurant within a 15-minute Grab ride from anywhere in the tourist belt. Our Bali trip cost breakdown shows exactly what a week there runs. Lombok is the trip to do on your second or third visit, when Bali starts feeling repetitive. The Gilis are the cheapest reset you can buy with a 1.5-hour ferry ride and the best spot in Indonesia for a couple who wants to put their phones in a hostel locker for 4 days.
FAQ
Is Bali better than Lombok for a honeymoon? Bali is easier and more built-out. Lombok is more dramatic and more private. For a 5-night honeymoon, Bali (Ubud + Seminyak). For a 7-10 night honeymoon with privacy and surf views, Lombok (Selong Selo or Sire Beach).
Is Gili Trawangan better than Bali for a chill vacation? Gili T is better than Bali if your version of chill is no vehicles, walking everywhere, and sunset swings. Bali is better if you want a deep food scene, day trips, reliable wifi, and Indian restaurants.
Can I get Indian food in Bali, Lombok, and the Gili Islands? Bali has Indian restaurants in Seminyak, Canggu, and Ubud. Lombok has a few in Mataram. The Gili Islands have effectively none.
