Why This Route
There are lots of ways to see Southeast Asia in three weeks, and lots of companies happy to sell you one. Tour packages fly you between capitals, put you in resorts, and hand you four postcards instead of one journey. Solo DIY gets you the real thing but leaves every border, ticket and 2am bus-arrival to you. This page is the middle path, and it’s ours: the backpacking route, day by day, exactly as we run it.
The sequence is deliberate. Thailand front-loads the chaos and the comfort — temples and street food, then a sleeper train north to Chiang Mai’s mountains. Laos is the exhale: two days on the Mekong, a river town, karst mountains, the cheapest stretch of the trip. Vietnam is the density leg — Hanoi, Ha Long, the coast, the best food of all 21 days. Cambodia closes it with the sunrise you came for: Angkor Wat. You build confidence in that order; by the third border you’re not a tourist being ferried, you’re a backpacker.

The 3 Signature Legs
1. The Slow Boat (Days 7–8) — the reason to do this route
The two-day slow boat down the Mekong from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang is the most iconic stretch of the banana pancake trail. Day one runs from Chiang Rai to the border at Chiang Khong, across the Friendship Bridge into Laos, and onto a long wooden boat with plastic chairs and a cooler of Beerlao. The river slides past villages that look like they did fifty years ago, and you sleep one night at Pakbeng, a one-road town that exists for exactly this. Day two brings the limestone canyons and, by late afternoon, the golden spires of Luang Prabang. Two days, ~200 km, zero roads. 2. Ha Long Bay (Day 14) — the busiest, best day in Vietnam
Pre-dawn limo bus out of Hanoi, then a full day on Lan Ha Bay — the quieter southern end of Ha Long’s limestone maze. Kayak under natural arches, swim in cave-lagoon water, lunch on the boat. Then the curveball: at 20:10 you board the Reunification Express sleeper south. One day, one bay, a full night of train — you wake up on the central coast without spending any daylight hours travelling. This is the compression that makes 21 days work.
3. Hoi An (Days 16–18) — where the trail slows down
Three days, exactly right. Day 16 is the ride you’ll talk about most: scooter over Hai Van Pass — the coastal road the Top Gear crew called “one of the best in the world” — dropping into lantern-lit Hoi An at sunset. Day 17 you earn your dinner: basket boats in Cam Thanh’s coconut forest, a market run, then a cooking class where you cook the meal you eat (on us). Day 18 goes inland: the caves of Marble Mountains and the Golden Bridge at Ba Na Hills. Then one overnight bus to Cambodia and the temples.
Border Crossings for Indians
Three land borders, four countries. The honest, current state for Indian passports — a 2026 snapshot, since rules shift.
Thailand → Laos (Friendship Bridge, Chiang Khong–Huay Xai, Day 7): The only border you walk across on foot. Thailand is visa-free for Indians for 60 days — no application, carry your return ticket. Laos is visa-on-arrival: ~₹2,896–₹4,054 (USD 30–40) depending on the fee tier, plus one passport photo. Fill the form at the counter, 45–90 minutes total. Laos → Vietnam (on the Day 11–12 sleeper): The 22-hour VIP sleeper from Vang Vieng crosses the land border in the middle of the night. Vietnam needs an e-visa applied online before you arrive — ~₹2,413 (USD 25), approved in 3–5 working days. We handle the application script and photo specs before you fly.
Vietnam → Cambodia (on the Day 19 sleeper): The international bus handles the stop — Vietnamese exit stamp, walk across, Cambodian visa-on-arrival on the other side. Cambodia VoA is ~₹2,896 (USD 30) plus a passport photo, or pre-arrange the e-visa to skip the queue. We pre-fill it with you two weeks out.
