Why a Full Month
Most people planning a southeast asia one month itinerary are really asking: can I do this whole region properly in a month? Yes — if you do it as one overland loop, not four disconnected countries. The banana pancake trail works as a single journey because it moves in one direction with the seasons, by river, rail and road. What the Extra 9 Days Add (Cambodia Coast + Mekong — the Best Part)
Honestly, the extension is what people come home talking about. Days 22–30 are a different register — dark history, an island, a river town, the fat bottom of the Mekong.
Phnom Penh + S-21 (Day 22) — the day that matters most
The taster group flies home; the extension heads south. Same afternoon: Tuol Sleng (S-21), the school the Khmer Rouge turned into a prison, and the Choeung Ek Killing Fields, with survivor audio guides that walk you through both. It’s heavy — we don’t try to soften it. Then dinner on the Sisowath riverside and the city’s backpacker energy snaps you back. Cambodia asks you to understand it before you enjoy it; this is that day.
Koh Rong + the plankton night (Days 23–24) — the night you’ll retell
Bus to Sihanoukville, speed-ferry across to Koh Rong — white sand, palms, the hostel right on the beach strip, evening BBQ, volleyball at Long Set. Save your stories for Day 24 after dark: a longtail boat into pitch-black water, and the bioluminescent plankton lights up blue around every stroke. Swimming in a galaxy. Not guaranteed — it depends on the night and the moon — but when it fires, it’s the most magical hour of the whole month.
Kampot (Days 25–26) — the most underrated town in Cambodia
Kampot is the lazy river town everyone wishes they’d known about. You check into Arcadia Backpackers, essentially a bar and waterpark built over the river — slides, swings, rope obstacles — free for guests. Day 26 you scoot through Khmer villages to the organic pepper farms: Kampot pepper is a protected-status spice that supplies actual Michelin kitchens, and you taste black, red and white straight off the vine. Afternoon: kayak the Green Cathedral, a mangrove channel that feels like a church made of trees.
Ho Chi Minh City + the Mekong Delta (Days 27–29) — closing the loop
Day 27 crosses back into Vietnam at Prek Chak / Ha Tien straight into Saigon’s District 1 — street-food crawl on Bui Vien that night. Day 28 is the Mekong Delta: hand-rowed sampans through narrow jungle streams, fruit orchards, river-market life as it’s actually lived. Day 29 is yours: War Remnants Museum, Reunification Palace, Ben Thanh Market, and coffee — Vietnamese coffee is the best in Southeast Asia and Saigon is its capital. Day 30, the group van to the airport. You finish in Vietnam’s most alive city, two days after a mangrove swamp and an island.

Both share the first 21 days — one cohort, together, through Day 21. The fork is Day 22 morning: the 21-day group flies home from Siem Reap; the extension stays on south.

Choose 21 days if: you have three weeks, this is your first multi-country trip, or you’re happy to come back for the full loop next year (most people do).
Choose 30 days if: you have a month and want the complete route in one shot. The deciding factor is rarely the money — it’s whether you want to finish at the temples or finish the whole journey. The slow boat, Ha Long, Hoi An and Angkor are in both; what 30 adds is the coast, the delta and the best stories.
Border Crossings: Four Borders, One Double
Four border crossings, and one you’ll do twice. The honest 2026 snapshot for Indian passports, since rules shift:
Thailand → Laos (Friendship Bridge, Chiang Khong–Huay Xai, Day 7): The only border you walk across on foot. Thailand is visa-free for Indians for 60 days — carry your return ticket. Laos is visa-on-arrival: ~₹2,896–₹4,054 (USD 30–40) plus one passport photo. 45–90 minutes, done as a group.
Laos → Vietnam (on the Day 11–12 sleeper): The 22-hour VIP sleeper crosses the border in the middle of the night. Vietnam needs an e-visa applied before you arrive — ~₹2,413 (USD 25), approved in 3–5 working days.
Vietnam → Cambodia (on the Day 19 sleeper): The bus handles the stop — Vietnamese exit stamp, walk across, Cambodian visa-on-arrival ~₹2,896 (USD 30) plus a photo, or the e-visa to skip the queue.
Cambodia → Vietnam again (Prek Chak / Ha Tien, Day 27): The part no blog tells you about — this route re-enters Vietnam. Vietnam’s standard e-visa is single-entry, so the 30-day loop needs a second Vietnam e-visa (~₹2,413) or a multi-entry visa, depending on current policy. Subodh’s Pro Tip: Carry USD 200 in small, clean notes — all four borders run on dollars; creased or torn bills get rejected at Cambodian and Lao counters. And sort the second Vietnam e-visa before you leave India. A border agent in Kampot is not where you want to discover it’s a one-time entry.

We pick a moonless night and take the longtail out — when it fires, it’s unforgettable; when it doesn’t, you still got a night boat ride on a Cambodian island.
Is the 30-day loop too fast? It’s a month, and it’s still a loop — there’s real travel in it. The extension deliberately slows the second half: full days on the island, a lazy town like Kampot, a free day in Saigon. If you want to go slower still, you’re customising, not following.
