Island Hopping Itinerary Philippines Thailand & Indonesia: Routes, Costs & Tips (2026)
✅ Last verified on-the-ground: 2026-07-17
📍 Distance: Indonesia to Philippines is roughly 2,500 km of open sea (fly, don’t boat). Phuket to Boracay is 2,800 km, almost always via Manila or Kuala Lumpur. Within each archipelago most hops are 30 to 150 km. ⏱️ Fastest option: 4 to 6 hours (one flight + ferry leg) 💰 Cheapest option: 1,500 PHP per day all-in inside a single archipelago ✅ Best option: Pick ONE archipelago and spend 2 weeks there, not all three
There are 7,641 islands in the Philippines, 18,000+ in Indonesia, and a few hundred worth visiting in Thailand’s Andaman and Gulf. Indian backpackers ask how to stitch them into one trip. The honest answer: you can’t, not well. The cheap, slow, fun version is picking one archipelago and going deep. The expensive, fast, fragmented version is flying between Manila, Phuket, and Bali on Cebu Pacific, AirAsia, and Scoot, treating each as a base, and stitching 4 to 5 nights at each. Both work. This guide covers both, with the Phuket-to-Boracay and Bali-to-Komodo corridors priced and timed against current 12go and 12go.asia ferry data (re-checked this month against current mid-market rates). Planning the wider region? Our Southeast Asia backpacking hub covers the full multi-country route.
Subodh’s Pro Tip: Indian passport holders get visa-free entry to all three countries in 2026 (Thailand 60 days, Philippines 30 days, Indonesia 30 days). Skip visa fees entirely.

Option 1. Pick One Archipelago (The Cheap Move)
This is what most Indian backpackers should do. One visa run, one set of ferries mastered, one currency memorized. Three islands beat seven rushed ones every time.
The Philippines, 2-week version: Manila → Cebu (flight, 1,200 PHP) → Bohol (ferry, 700 PHP, 2 hours) → Palawan / El Nido (flight Cebu to El Nido, 1,800 PHP) → Coron (ferry from El Nido, 1,500 PHP, 4 hours) → Boracay (flight El Nido to Caticlan, 2,500 PHP, then 30-minute boat transfer 200 PHP). Total internal transport runs about 8,000 PHP. Hostels in this route are 400 to 700 PHP a night for dorms, 1,200 to 2,000 PHP for a private room. Daily food budget of 600 to 900 PHP covers carinderia lunches and a Jollibee meal. The El Nido to Coron leg is the most important ferry to book 48 hours ahead, especially in peak season (December to May). See our Philippines islands guide for a deeper dive on which stops to pick.
Thailand, Andaman version, 1 to 2 weeks: Phuket (Patong or Chalong as a base, ₹861 (~300 THB or ~$8.94) dorms) → Koh Phi Phi (ferry from Rassada Pier, ₹1,292 (~450 THB or ~$13.40), 1.5 hours) → Koh Lanta (ferry, ₹1,005 (~350 THB or ~$10.43), 1.5 hours) → Koh Lipe (ferry via Pakbara Pier, ₹4,020 (~1,400 THB or ~$41.70), 4 to 5 hours) → back to Phuket (ferry, ₹4,594 (~1,600 THB or ~$47.66)). Total internal transport is roughly ₹14,358 (~5,000 THB or ~$148.93). Hostels are ₹718-₹1,292 (~250-450 THB or ~$7.45-$13.40) dorms on Phi Phi and Lanta, ₹1,149-₹1,723 (~400-600 THB or ~$11.91-$17.87) in Phuket. Street food runs ₹172-₹345 (~60-120 THB or ~$1.79-$3.57) a meal, 7-Eleven Pad Krapow is your backup. The Koh Lipe ferry crosses into a marine park area, bring cash for the ₹574 (~200 THB or ~$5.96) national park fee on arrival. Our Thailand island hopping guide covers the full Andaman route in detail.
Indonesia, Bali-to-Komodo version, 2 to 3 weeks: Bali (Ubud or Canggu as a base, ₹804 (~150,000 IDR or ~$8.34) dorms) → Lombok (fast boat from Padang Bai, ₹1,875 (~350,000 IDR or ~$19.45), 4 to 5 hours) → Gili Trawangan (public boat from Bangsal, ₹134 (~25,000 IDR or ~$1.39), 30 minutes) → Labuan Bajo, Flores (flight Bali or Lombok to LBJ, ₹3,215 (~600,000 IDR or ~$33.35)) → Komodo (multi-day boat from Labuan Bajo, ₹8,037 (~1,500,000 IDR or ~$83.37) for 2 days, 2,000,000 for 3 days). Hostels in Labuan Bajo start at ₹536 (~100,000 IDR or ~$5.56), more like 200,000 in a good dorm with breakfast. Daily food budget ₹429-₹804 (~80,000-150,000 IDR or ~$4.45-$8.34) covers nasi campur, mie goreng, and Indonesian coffee. See our Indonesia 2-week itinerary for a day-by-day budget breakdown.
Subodh’s Pro Tip: On a backpacker budget, ONE archipelago at 14 nights usually beats THREE countries at 5 nights each. You’ll save on flights, visas, and the mental load of constantly repacking.
Option 2. Multi-Archae (The Best Experience, If You Have 3+ Weeks)
If you have the time and don’t mind a few long travel days, the multi-archipelago route genuinely works. Most Indian backpackers who try this fly into Manila, do 7 to 10 nights in the Philippines, fly to Bali or Bangkok, do 7 to 10 nights there, and end at the third stop.
The Phuket-and-Beyond loop, sometimes called the southern Thailand and Philippines bridge: Phuket (4 nights) → Koh Lanta (3 nights) → Koh Lipe (2 nights) → fly to Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok → fly to Manila or Caticlan → Boracay (3 nights) → Palawan (4 to 5 nights). Total transit days eaten up: 3. Total fun days kept: 15 to 17. This is the sweet spot for backpackers who can’t decide.
The Bali-to-Manila surf-and-sand corridor, covered in more detail in our surfing route from Indonesia to Philippines guide, runs Lombok → Gili → Bali → fly to Manila → fly to Siargao → fly to Caticlan (Boracay). It costs more in flights (expect 8,000 to 12,000 PHP on Cebu Pacific, AirAsia, and Scoot combined) but covers completely different scenes, Balinese culture and reef breaks vs. Philippine island beach culture.
Three-country capital-to-island combo: Singapore (layover, 1 night) → Bali (4 nights) → Manila (3 nights) → fly to Boracay (4 nights). Total flights roughly 12,000 PHP / 3.5 million IDR combined. You skip Thailand entirely, which is a shame, but you cover three different island cultures.
The Phuket base itself is well-covered by a hostel like Mad Monkey Phuket Patong Beach, a 9.7-rated backpacker hub in Patong with dorm beds from ₹1,292 (~450 THB or ~$13.40), daily pub crawls, and direct bookings onto Phi Phi and Koh Lanta ferries. If you land late or want to skip the Patong chaos, The Luna Hostel Phuket Airport (9.48) sits 10 minutes from HKT and runs airport transfers included in the dorm price (₹1,005 (~350 THB or ~$10.43)).
| Hostel | Location | Rating | Dorm Price | Book |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mad Monkey Phuket Patong Beach | Patong, Phuket | 9.7 | ₹1,292 (~450 THB or ~$13.40) | Check prices |
| The Luna Hostel Phuket Airport | Phuket Airport (HKT) | 9.48 | ₹1,005 (~350 THB or ~$10.43) | Check prices |
| For logistics up front and to compare live ferry times for the Andaman leg, run the route through 12go before you book, it’s where every Thai ferry operator publishes their schedules. |
Option 3. Fastest Multi-Archae (Fly Everything)
If you only have 7 to 10 nights total, fly. Long bus + ferry chains eat 6 to 10 hours each leg. Three of those legs and you’ve burned 24 hours in transit on a 7-day trip. The flight-only version keeps transit to about 8 hours total.
Cheapest carriers across the three countries, in order of how often Indian backpackers use them:
- AirAsia dominates Phuket ↔ Bali and Bangkok ↔ Manila. Book 4 to 6 weeks out for ₹5,169-₹10,050 (~1,800-3,500 THB or ~$53.62-$104.25) one-way.
- Cebu Pacific is the workhorse inside the Philippines (Caticlan, El Nido, Siargao) and runs cheap Manila ↔ Bali sales twice a year.
- Scoot (Singapore) handles Bali ↔ Manila and Bali ↔ Bangkok via Changi for ~₹11,209 (~150 SGD or ~$116.28) one-way.
- Citilink, Lion Air, Batik Air cover the Indonesian domestic hops (Bali ↔ Labuan Bajo, Lombok ↔ Bali) for ₹3,215-₹6,430 (~600,000-1,200,000 IDR or ~$33.35-$66.69).
A representative 7-night fast trip: Bangkok → fly to Phuket (₹3,446 (~1,200 THB or ~$35.74), 1.5 hours) → 3 nights in Phuket + Koh Phi Phi ferry day → fly Phuket → Manila (₹8,614 (~3,000 THB or ~$89.36), 4 hours) → fly Manila → Caticlan (1,500 PHP, 1 hour) → 3 nights in Boracay → fly home from Caticlan/KLO via Manila. Total flights ₹16,368 (~5,700 THB or ~$169.78) + 1,500 PHP + the international fare home. Week of Phuket sunsets and week of Boracay white sand, with Koh Phi Phi as the snorkel day in between.
Subodh’s Pro Tip: For the Phuket leg, rent a longtail boat for the day (₹5,169-₹7,179 (~1,800-2,500 THB or ~$53.62-$74.47) split 4 ways) instead of a 6-hour group tour. You’ll hit James Bond Island Luxury Sunset Cruise (4.9-rated) and Chalong Bay viewpoint (4.8-rated) without the tour bus crowd. The half-day Phuket tours that start in Chalong end at the Big Buddha viewpoint too, worth stacking them on the same day.
When NOT to Take This Route
Three months will ruin each of these three:
- June to October in the Philippines: typhoon belt, ferries cancelled 2 to 3 days at a stretch, El Nido and Coron boat trips often shut. If you’re locked into that window, do Bali + Komodo instead (their dry side is June to September).
- November to December in the Andaman (Phuket, Phi Phi, Lanta): monsoon season, ferry cancellations daily, most dive shops close. Book January to April instead, perfect calm.
- January to February in Komodo: rough seas, the liveaboard operators shut the multi-day trips and you’ll lose 4 days of your itinerary waiting for a window. Aim for April to June or September to October when the wind is steady and the manta rays are around.
The single best combined weather window across all three is late January to mid-March. You get Thailand’s high season, Philippines dry season, and Indonesia’s shoulder season (calm seas, no rain on Komodo). Book ferries 2 to 3 weeks out in this window.
Subodh’s Pro Tip: If you have to cross the Philippine typhoon months, stay inland in Cebu or Bohol. The islands shut down but the cities stay open, and you’re 1 flight away from hopping back to Thailand if the weather goes bad.
Indian Passport Specifics
Indian passport holders get 60-day visa-free entry to Thailand, 30-day visa-free to the Philippines, and 30-day visa-free to Indonesia, all on arrival. No fee, no embassy visit, no pre-registration. Documents to carry:
- Passport with 6+ months validity, at least 2 blank pages per country you cross
- Printed onward ticket for each country (return flight home works for all three, no need for onward to a third country)
- Proof of funds (US ₹48,202 (~500 USD) equivalent in any currency, though this is rarely asked in any of these three)
- Hotel booking for first night in each country (Hostelworld confirmation on your phone counts)
No tickets, no exit fees, no departure tax for Indians at any of the three airports. SIM cards work for Indian eKYC, though you’ll need a passport photo for the Thai AIS booth and an unlocked phone for the Indonesian Telkomsel.
If something genuinely goes wrong (lost passport, arrest, hospital): the Indian embassy in Bangkok (02 258 0300) handles Thailand and Cambodia, the Indian embassy in Manila (+63 2 8843 0979) handles the Philippines, and the Indian embassy in Jakarta (+62 21 520 4150) handles Indonesia. All three maintain on-call duty officers for emergency passport renewal.
Check the Indian MEA travel advisory page before departure for any active typhoon warnings, civil unrest, or temporary border changes that affect your specific week.
Getting Connected
Coverage is excellent across all three, with one death zone per archipelago.
Thailand: AIS and dtac 4G covers every ferry route and most beaches except deep Koh Lipe and Koh Tarutao. Buy an AIS SIM at Phuket airport (₹859 (~299 THB or ~$8.91) for 7 days, 15 GB).
Philippines: Globe and Smart both fine. Buy at Cebu or Manila airport (no ID needed beyond passport), 40 to 60 PHP loads a week. Siquijor and parts of Siargao have dead zones, plan offline maps.
Indonesia: Telkomsel works everywhere tourist-relevant including Komodo liveaboards. Buy at Bali airport or any Indomaret, ₹536 (~100,000 IDR or ~$5.56) for 30 days, 30 GB. Get Nomad eSIM if you don’t want to queue at the airport, the data plans are competitive and you activate on arrival.
FAQ
Is island hopping in Thailand safe for Indian backpackers? Yes, well-trodden, no specific advisories. Phuket has the largest concentration of Indian travellers in SE Asia so you’ll find Hindi-speaking staff at several Phuket hostels.
Which is cheaper, Philippines or Thailand for 2 weeks? Thailand, by a noticeable margin. A 14-night Phuket + Phi Phi + Lanta trip runs ~₹45,944 (~16,000 THB or ~$476.58) on dorms + ferries + food. The Philippines equivalent (Manila + El Nido + Coron + Boracay) runs ~22,000 PHP (~₹36,500 PHP at current 1 PHP ≈ 1.66 INR rates, but the daily spend is higher in PHP because of the more expensive ferries).
Do I need a visa if I’m combining all three? No. All three are visa-free for Indian passports. You just show the passport, get stamped, and go.
Can I book Komodo boats from India? Yes, online 2-3 months ahead for the major operators, but cancellations are common and Indonesian boats are easier to book in person at Labuan Bajo the day before departure.
Is Boracay worth the flight from Phuket? If you have 4+ nights yes, if you have 2-3 nights the transit days will eat half your trip. Combine it with El Nido in the same Philippines trip instead.
What about food, especially vegetarian/Indian? Phuket has Vrindavan - Indian, Vegetarian Restaurant in Phuket (4.9-rated) for proper North Indian veg thalis around ₹718-₹1,149 (~250-400 THB or ~$7.45-$11.91). For Thai food at local prices, Local Canteen Phuket (4.9-rated) does pad thai, som tam, and curries from ₹230-₹431 (~80-150 THB or ~$2.38-$4.47). Inside the Philippines and Indonesia you won’t get the same density of Indian restaurants, so use happycow.net to find veg spots before arrival.
Should I bring INR cash or use a forex card? Forex card, almost always. Use a Visa/Mastercard forex card with zero markup (HDFC, IDFC First, Niyo, Jupiter all work), avoid airport ATM withdrawal fees. Bring ₹19,281-₹38,561 (~200-400 USD) cash as a backup, USD exchanges cleanly in all three.
Subodh’s Take
Three backpackers out of five spend their first island-hopping trip zigzagging between Manila, Phuket, and Bali on a budget they didn’t have. Pick one archipelago for 14 nights, walk slowly, and you’ll see ten times more than the traveler sprinting across three. Save the multi-country combo for your second SE Asia trip, when you already know whether you like Thai food more than Filipino food.
