Choose Da Nang If…
- You want a real beach in walking distance of your hostel. My Khe Beach is a 6 km white-sand stretch, and most of the backpacker hostels are a 5-minute walk from it. Hoi An’s beach (An Bang, Cua Dai) is 4 km from the old town and you need a bike or Grab every time.
- You fly in late or fly out early. Da Nang International Airport (DAD) is 15 minutes from anywhere in the city. Hoi An’s “nearest airport” is DAD, but the transfer adds 45 minutes and costs ₹1,289 (~350,000 VND or ~$13.37) one way.
- You need Indian food more than twice a week. Da Nang has established Indian restaurants in the Han River and beachfront area. Hoi An has one or two, but the menus are shorter.
- You like a proper city at night. Sky36 on the Han River has cocktails at rooftop prices, Bach Dang street is lined with bars, and the Dragon Bridge breathes fire at 9 pm on weekends. Hoi An’s old town goes quiet after 10 pm by law.
Choose Hoi An If…
- You came to Vietnam for the slow, atmospheric travel photos. Hoi An’s old town at sunset, with lanterns strung across the river and tailors stepping out with finished shirts, is the most-photographed 2 km of Central Vietnam. There is no equivalent in Da Nang. - You’re vegetarian and don’t want to think about it. For local food, Cao Lau (the local noodle dish) is traditionally made with pork, but most vendors will swap in tofu. White-rose dumplings are veg by default. Several stalls in the old town do an all-veg banh mi for ₹92 (~25,000 VND or ~$0.96).
