Where to Stay

The One-Day Itinerary
Here’s how I’d spend 24 hours on Koh Samui. This assumes you arrive the night before, sleep in Chaweng, and have the next day free.
Morning (6:30am-12:00pm): South Coast and the Big Buddha
Set an alarm for 6:30. The morning window is the only time Koh Samui’s roads move at a sensible pace and the only time the south coast beaches look like the photos in guidebooks from 2008. Ride south to Big Buddha Temple (Wat Phra Yai) on the small island connected by a causeway. Koh Samui is not an entry port. You’ll clear immigration at Suvarnabhumi (Bangkok), Don Mueang (Bangkok), Phuket, or Surat Thani airport before you ever see the island. Common Mistakes
Renting a motorbike without checking the brakes. Koh Samui’s hills are steeper than Phuket’s and wet roads are routine. Check both brakes and the tyres before handing over your passport. Most hostels now accept a cash deposit instead, which is a much better deal for you if you’re renting from them.
Booking the Ang Thong day trip on day one. It takes the whole day and you’ll spend 12 hours on a boat feeling sick. Day two or three only.
