3 Days in Yogyakarta: The Backpacker Itinerary That Works
✅ Last verified on-the-ground: 2026-07-17
This 3 day Yogyakarta itinerary covers Borobudur at sunrise, Prambanan at sunset, and the Kraton, in that order, over three days. Follow the plan below and you’ll leave having seen the temples, eaten the food, and understood why Jogja feels different from the rest of Java. For related planning, see our guide on Sea Backpacking Hub.

The 3-Day Itinerary
This is the only Yogyakarta itinerary you need. Day 1 is the big one, the sunrise temple. Day 2 is the Hindu counterpart. Day 3 is the city itself. You may also find How to Plan Bali Trip From India useful for this trip.
Day 1: Borobudur at Sunrise, Then Slow Down
Borobudur sunrise is the most-booked experience in Central Java, and for good reason: you sit on the upper terraces of the world’s largest Buddhist temple as the sun climbs behind two volcanoes and the stupas turn gold. It is the kind of image that makes the 3:45 AM alarm worth every minute. The official park-side package includes the 4 AM hotel pickup, the entry ticket, and a light breakfast. Quotas are tight, so book 3 to 5 days ahead on the official portal. See also: Baguio Trip Budget Breakdown How Much Money You Really Need 1 500 Day Guide.
By 9 AM you’re back in Yogya. Eat. The gudeg (jackfruit stew) is the local signature, slow-cooked in coconut sugar and palm leaves, sweet and savoury at the same time. Lotus Garden is a calm midday stop if your hostel is in the Prawirotaman area. For related planning, see our guide on Cat Ba on a Backpacker Budget How to Spend 1 500 Day.
Afternoon is for doing nothing. You’ve been up since 3:45. Read. Nap. Wander to Titik Nol Kilometer Yogyakarta, the literal zero-kilometre marker where the city’s main roads all begin, and grab a cheap coffee.
Sunset plan: take a slow walk along Jalan Malioboro. The street food here is hit-and-miss; the people-watching is not.
Day 2: Prambanan and Ratu Boko
Prambanan is the 9th-century Hindu temple complex that answers Borobudur across the religious divide, all 47-metre stone spires, slender and sharp where Borobudur is round and meditative. It hits harder in late afternoon when the light slants across the carved panels of the Ramayana. See Ratu Boko Temple Entry Ticket availability on GetYourGuide the same day, because Ratu Boko sits on the hill above Prambanan and gives you the sunset view back across the temples below. This is the move. Most travellers miss it.
The Prambanan Ramayana Ballet runs on selected evenings at an open-air stage between the two temple complexes. Check the official Prambanan calendar on the day.
Back in Yogya by 9 PM. Eat sate or nasi gudeg again. Go to sleep. You’ve earned it.
Day 3: The City Itself: Kraton, Taman Sari, and Silver
Day 3 is where you understand Yogya. The Kraton (Sultan’s Palace) is still a functioning royal court, not a museum. The current sultan lives a few hundred metres from the entrance. See Old Town, Market, and Temple Tour with Guide availability on GetYourGuide if you want context, the guided version explains the split kingdom arrangement between Yogyakarta and Surakarta that has lasted since the 1755 Treaty of Giyanti. Without a guide you’ll see a beautiful palace and miss the entire reason it matters.
Taman Sari, the Water Castle, is a 15-minute walk from Kraton. It’s half-ruined, half-restored, and the photo of the bathing pool is the one you’ll see on every Yogya Instagram account. See Yogyakarta City Tour: Taman Sari and Keraton Yogyakarta availability on GetYourGuide to combine both into a half-day.
Afternoon: silversmithing. Kota Gede is the silver quarter and it has earned the name. See Silver Jewelry-Making Course availability on GetYourGuide and you’ll spend three hours hammering a ring out of a flat silver strip, then take it home.
Evening: dinner, then one drink somewhere good. More on both below.
How to Get There
Most backpackers arrive from Jakarta or Surabaya. Both are easy on the train.
| Route | Mode | Duration | Price | Book |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jakarta → Yogyakarta | Train (Argo Lawu / Tugu business class) | 7h 30m | ₹1,875 (~350,000 IDR or ~$19.45) | Book on 12go |
| Jakarta → Yogyakarta | Bus | 9 to 12 hours | ₹1,340 (~250,000 IDR or ~$13.89) | Book on 12go |
| Surabaya → Yogyakarta | Train | 4h 30m | ₹1,072 (~200,000 IDR or ~$11.12) | Book on 12go |
Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) is the main international hub, replaced Adisucipto in 2024. From the airport, the DAMRI airport bus runs to Tugu station in about 60 minutes for ₹268 (~50,000 IDR or ~$2.78). Grab costs around ₹804 (~150,000 IDR or ~$8.34) and takes 50 minutes.
If you’re already in Southeast Asia and flying in direct, round-trip tickets from India to Yogyakarta via Kuala Lumpur or Singapore run from ₹18,000 (~$186.71) to ₹28,000 (~$290.45) in low season, cheaper than most Europe round-trips and faster. Check Bangkok to Yogyakarta flights for connection points.
Where to Stay
Prawirotaman is the backpacker neighbourhood, leafy streets south of the Kraton, walking distance to the action, full of hostels and warungs. Sosrowijayan is the older alternative near Malioboro, louder and cheaper. Both work.
| Hostel / Guesthouse | Cost/night | Vibe | Book Here |

| Losmanos Hostel | ₹670 (~125,000 IDR or ~$6.95) | Boutique dorm, music-led | Check prices |
| My pick: Snooze Hostel Yogyakarta if you want a social crowd and a rooftop for Borobudur pickup meetups, Huma Yogyakarta Hostel if you want quiet and design. Both book out fast in July and August. |
What to Eat
Yogyakarta is one of the easier Indonesian cities for vegetarians if you know what to order. Most Javanese food is fish or chicken-based; beef is rare and pork rarer. Gudeg, the signature dish, is 100% vegetarian by default, jackfruit stewed in coconut and palm sugar. Say “gudeg telur” (with egg) or “gudeg tahu” (with tofu) for a clean veg plate.
Five places to eat:
- Kalluna Cafe & Restaurant, Prawirotaman. The crossover spot. Western pasta if you’re tired of rice, plus ayam betutu (Balinese slow-cooked chicken) for a splurge. Mains ₹188-₹429 (~35,000-80,000 IDR or ~$1.95-$4.45).
- Lotus Garden, Prawirotaman. Calm garden setting, the place for a slow lunch. Local and Indonesian classics, mostly under ₹214 (~40,000 IDR or ~$2.22).
- Keraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat, inside the palace complex. Royal Javanese plates, slightly touristy but the location is the point. Try the nasi gudeg here, it does not get more local than this.
- Koki Joni Pasta & Turkey, Prawirotaman. Italian-Javanese fusion that sounds weird and tastes less weird than expected. Cheap, casual, good for vegetarians.
- Asmara Art & Coffee Shop, Sosrowijayan. Cafe with rotating local art, a working spot with strong Indonesian coffee (kopi tubruk) for ₹64 (~12,000 IDR or ~$0.67).
Avoid the Malioboro satay street vendors for vegetarian food; the chicken satay marinade here often uses shrimp paste. Stick to the warungs in Prawirotaman or the Kraton food court.
What to Do (Beyond the Day-by-Day)
If you have an extra half-day or want to swap something in:
- Ijen & Bromo Volcano Adventure. See Ijen & Bromo Volcano Adventure to Yogyakarta availability on GetYourGuide. Two-day volcano trip from Yogya to the blue-flame crater of Ijen and the sunrise caldera of Bromo. Long, but the only way to see both without going back to Surabaya.
- Tugu Yogyakarta Monument. See Tugu Yogyakarta Monument tours on GetYourGuide is a 10-minute stop, not a destination, but the monument has a backstory that matters: it was built as a symbolic merger of male and female energy, and the 2023 fire damaged the same monument that was bombed in 1949. Worth 30 minutes between other stops.
Getting Connected
Yogyakarta is well-served by Indonesian telcos. The two that matter are Telkomsel (best coverage, including at Borobudur for sunrise pickup points) and XL Axiata (cheaper, fine in the city).
A Telkomsel tourist SIM with 25 GB of data + local calls runs about ₹804 (~150,000 IDR or ~$8.34) at the airport counter. If you’d rather not swap physical SIMs, Get Nomad eSIM works on Indonesian networks and activates before you fly.
WiFi at hostels is reliable in Prawirotaman, weaker in Sosrowijayan. Cafes in the backpacker strip will let you camp all day if you order one drink every two hours.
Subodh’s Pro Tip: Buy your SIM at the official airport counter, not from the touts near baggage claim. The touts sell you a “Telkomsel” SIM that’s been activated, used, and recharged with someone else’s KYC. The official counter takes your passport, registers it correctly, and gives you a working SIM in 4 minutes.
Daily Budget Breakdown

| Category | Budget/day |
|---|---|
| Dorm bed | ₹697 (~130,000 IDR or ~$7.23) |
| Food (3 meals) | ₹482 (~90,000 IDR or ~$5) |
| Local transport (Grab, Gojek, becak) | ₹268 (~50,000 IDR or ~$2.78) |
| Activities | 0 IDR (front-load big tickets on Day 1 and 2) |
| Misc / drinks | ₹214 (~40,000 IDR or ~$2.22) |

Where to Go from Here
Yogya is a hub. From here you can go north to the volcanoes, east to Bali, or back to Jakarta for your flight out.
| Destination | Mode | Duration | Price | Book |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jakarta | bus | 1h 10m | ₹925 (~9.60 USD) | Book on 12go |
| Malang | train | 6h 1m | ₹2,217 (~23 USD) | Book on 12go |
| Bandung | train | 16h 59m | ₹2,217 (~23 USD) | Book on 12go |
| Probolinggo | train | 7h 14m | ₹3,374 (~35 USD) | Book on 12go |
| Banyuwangi | train | 19h 14m | ₹11,086 (~115 USD) | Book on 12go |
| Semarang | train | 23h 25m | ₹578 (~6 USD) | Book on 12go |
For Bali specifically, the train + ferry combo via Surabaya to Banyuwangi then a ferry to Gilimanuk is the cheap route, about ₹1,340 (~250,000 IDR or ~$13.89) total and 14 to 16 hours. Direct flights are ₹3,751 (~700,000 IDR or ~$38.91) with AirAsia and take 1h 20m.
Common Mistakes
- Trying to do Borobudur at sunset. Sunrise is the experience. Sunset is fine but the light is behind the temple, the photo is worse, and the crowds are bigger. Sunrise also gets you back by 9 AM with the whole day ahead.
- Skipping Ratu Boko. It’s right there, on the same ticket logic, and the view back across Prambanan at golden hour is the single best photo op in Central Java.
- Exchanging money at the airport. The rates inside YIA are 4 to 6% worse than the city. Bring USD in clean, unfolded bills and exchange in Prawirotaman or Malioboro.
Safety Notes
Yogyakarta is one of the safest cities in Indonesia for travellers, but standard precautions apply. Solo female travellers generally feel comfortable walking in Prawirotaman after dark. Use Grab or Gojek at night rather than becak (cycle rickshaws), which are fine for short hops but slow at night. Theft from dorms is rare but use the lockers. For current advisories, check the Indian MEA travel advisory page at mea.gov.in before departure, and the Indonesian government’s own travel portal.
Safety Alert: Yogyakarta sits in a seismically active region. Follow standard earthquake safety protocols if tremors occur, and ask your hostel staff for evacuation guidance.
FAQ
Is Yogyakarta safe for solo Indian women? Yes. The Prawirotaman area is heavily backpacker-trafficked, hostels have female-only dorms, and Grab is available citywide. Standard precautions: avoid walking alone in unfamiliar alleys after midnight, and use registered taxis or Grab rather than unmarked becak at night.
Can I get Indian food in Yogyakarta? Yes, but it’s not great and it’s expensive by Yogya standards. Prawirotaman has a few North Indian restaurants (Butter Chicken, Rani’s) charging ₹429-₹643 (~80,000-120,000 IDR or ~$4.45-$6.67) for a thali. Most Indian backpackers eat gudeg, nasi campur, and Javanese warungs for 3 meals, then treat themselves to an Indian dinner once per trip.
Is Borobudur worth the sunrise ticket price? Yes. The foreign tourist rate for sunrise is among the most expensive in Southeast Asia, but it includes transport from your hotel, the entry fee, and a guide.
Do I need a visa for Indonesia? Indian passport holders get a Visa on Arrival (VoA) for ₹3,374 (~35 USD), extendable once for another 30 days. Bring exact USD cash; the counters will refuse torn bills. Apply online via the official e-VoA portal for faster processing at the airport.
How much should I budget for 3 days in Yogyakarta? ₹8,037-₹9,644 (~1,500,000-1,800,000 IDR or ~$83.37-$100.04) total, including the temple tickets, hostel, food, and local transport. Excludes your flights in and out.
What’s the best time to visit Yogyakarta? May to September, dry season. Borobudur sunrise gets cancelled in heavy rain. Avoid the week around Eid (Hari Raya) when domestic tourism spikes.
Subodh’s Take
Yogyakarta is the city I’d push a first-time Southeast Asia backpacker toward if I had to pick one stop that proves the whole region is worth the flight. It’s cheap, the temples are world-class without being crowded, and the food rewards anyone willing to skip the Western cafes. The 3-day plan above works because it gives each of the three big things (Borobudur, Prambanan, the city itself) its own day. Don’t try to compress it into two. You won’t enjoy it.
