- Picking up a new Thai tourist visa (TR or SETV). Indians now need a Thai tourist visa in advance from a Thai consulate. Vientiane has a Thai embassy that processes Indian passports in 3-5 working days, and that’s why Vientiane has been the default visa-run city for Indians since the 2024 rule change.

Why pick Penang. Indians get 30 days visa-free in Malaysia. Flight BKK → PEN is 1 hour 45 minutes. You land in Penang, walk around Georgetown for the day (or stay one night), and fly back. No Malaysian visa needed, no Thai visa needed, you’re just resetting your Thai entry stamp on the way back.

3. Poipet (Cambodia). Cheapest Same-Day Run, Rougher Border
Why consider Poipet. It’s the cheapest possible visa run from Bangkok if you’re on a budget. You can do it by bus in a single day, no flight needed. Bangkok to Poipet is roughly 6 hours by direct bus, and the Cambodian border at Aranyaprachomat is the busiest land border in mainland Southeast Asia. Cambo

Why I’m lukewarm on Poipet. The border is chaotic, tuk-tuk drivers push hard, the casino zone near Poipet is seedy, and you can’t realistically stop overnight in Poipet on a one-day run. If your goal is a new Thai tourist visa, you can’t get it here either, Cambodia has no Thai embassy.

4. Ranong. Kawthaung (Myanmar). Currently Closed
The honest update. Myanmar’s land borders with Thailand have been closed or restricted for Indian passport holders since 2021. The Ranong. Kawthaung crossing (the one backpackers used to take) is not issuing tourist visas to Indian nationals in 2026. A few travellers have reported crossing with a pre-arranged e-visa, though success is inconsistent.
Skip this option. If you’re reading a 2024 or 2025 guide saying “take the slow boat from Ranong to Kawthaung,” it’s outdated. Treat Myanmar land borders as closed until the Indian MEA advisory says otherwise.

Step-by-Step: A Vientiane Visa Run from Bangkok
This is the most common visa run for Indians, so let’s walk through it end to end.
Day 1: Fly Bangkok → Vientiane
- Book the flight for an early morning departure (DMK 07:00 or 08:00).
- Arrive Wattay Airport (VTE) by 09:30.

Common Mistakes Indians Make on a Visa Run
1. Showing up at the Thai consulate without bank statements. The Thai consulate in Vientiane refuses applications without 6 months of bank statements showing real money. Don’t arrive with ₹142,945 (~50,000 THB or ~$1,483.77) in cash and nothing else; they want to see the history.
2. Booking a hostel in Bangkok for only 3 nights when applying for a 60-day visa. The TR visa officer checks your hotel booking duration. If your booking is 3 nights but you’re applying for a 60-day visa, expect a refusal. Book a refundable hotel for the full intended stay.
3. Crossing at Poipet expecting to get a Thai visa. Cambodia doesn’t issue Thai visas. If you need a new Thai TR/SETV visa, Poipet can’t help you. Only the Thai consulates in Vientiane, Kuala Lumpur, or Penang process these reliably.
4. Doing same-day same-airport returns from Penang. Immigration officers at BKK and DMK have seen this trick a hundred times. Some will stamp you in for a short period (15 days) instead of the full 30 days if your pattern looks suspicious. Stay at least one night in the destination.
5. Paying the overstay fine before exiting Thailand. If you overstay, the fine is 500 THB/day (~₹1,434), capped at ₹57,178 (~20,000 THB or ~$593.51). Pay it at the immigration counter before you board your flight out. Don’t try to sneak out; they’ll catch you at the gate.

1. The Thai visa-exempt period for Indians changed in 2024. Indians receive 30 days visa-free in Thailand. Verify the current rule on the Thai MFA site before you fly.
2. Border officers can refuse repeat visa runs. Thailand’s immigration act allows officers to deny entry if they suspect you’re running a visa business or have no genuine travel purpose. Two visa runs in three months is fine. Six in a year with no other reason to be in the region raises eyebrows. Carry a flight ticket out of Thailand, even if you’re not using it, to show you’re a real traveller.
3. The Penang option changes for Indian-passport SETV applicants. If you’re applying for a 90-day Thai SETV (Special Tourist Visa, for stays over 60 days), you must apply at the Thai consulate in Kuala Lumpur, not Penang. Penang only handles standard TR visas, and even those take longer than the Vientiane office.
4. Lao and Myanmar visa-on-arrival fees are USD-priced but payable in THB. At the Wattay Airport counter, the fee is ₹2,890 (~30 USD), but the officer will accept 1,200 THB.
