What to Do in Thailand for 7 Days: The Best Itinerary You’ll Use (2026)
✅ Last verified on-the-ground: 23 July 2026
Seven days in Thailand is enough for Bangkok plus two islands, or Bangkok plus the northern mountains, if you skip the slow-and-everything trap. Here is the route most first-time Indian travellers end up taking, with the daily timing, transport, and cost in INR so you know what you’re committing to before you book the flight.
This article covers the actual route, not the postcard version. I’ll give you the Bangkok + islands plan that 80% of first-timers should follow, then two variations for beach purists and culture seekers. Total trip cost from India, day by day, is below in the budget breakdown.

What Does a “7-Day Thailand Trip” Look Like?
A 7-day Thailand trip is a fixed-departure window that covers Bangkok plus one or two regions, almost always the Andaman coast (Krabi, Phuket, Phi Phi) or the Gulf islands (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan). It is the standard length for India’s tour-operator packages and the most common duration Indian travellers book independently after seeing friend’s reels.
The reason 7 days is the magic number: Bangkok eats 2 nights minimum for jet lag, the islands need 3 nights to justify the flight down, and you have 2 nights left for transit and a buffer. Anything shorter forces you to skip either Bangkok or the islands, and skipping either is a regret.
Two big decisions shape everything else: start in Bangkok or the islands, and go Andaman (Phuket/Krabi side) or Gulf (Koh Samui side). I’ll show you the most popular plan, then two variations.
The Default 7-Day Itinerary: Bangkok + Krabi + Phi Phi
This is the route I’d send a first-timer on. Bangkok gets you culture, food, and the Grand Palace. Krabi gets you the dramatic limestone karst scenery Railay Beach is famous for. Phi Phi gets you the postcard turquoise water and island-hopping day trips.
Day 1: Arrive Bangkok, settle in, hit the night market
You land at Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang, take the airport rail link (₹129 (~45 THB or ~$1.34) to Phaya Thai, 30 minutes) or a meter taxi (~300 THB to Sukhumvit with tolls), and check into your hostel in the Sukhumvit or Khao San area.
mango sticky rice ₹229-₹286 (~80-100 THB or ~$2.37-$2.97), fresh fruit shakes ₹114-₹172 (~40-60 THB or ~$1.19-$1.78).
Day 1 spend: ₹4,288-₹7,147 (~1,500-2,500 THB or ~$44.51-$74.19) total (food + transport + a drink).
Day 2: Grand Palace + Wat Pho + Chinatown
Wake up at 7am. The Grand Palace opens at 8:30am and by 10am the queue is an hour long. Dress code is strict: covered shoulders, covered knees, no open shoes. If you show up in shorts you’ll be sent to a rental shop across the street (₹572 (~200 THB or ~$5.94) deposit for a wrap, returned when you bring it back).
Tickets for the Grand Palace are ₹1,429 (~500 THB or ~$14.84). Wat Pho next door is ₹572 (~200 THB or ~$5.94). Both are within walking distance.
Afternoon: ferry across the Chao Phraya to Wat Arun (₹286 (~100 THB or ~$2.97), the riverside temple). Then head to Chinatown (Yaowarat) for dinner. The seafood stalls on Soi 6 and the bird’s nest soup shops stay open until midnight.
Day 2 spend: ₹5,146-₹7,147 (~1,800-2,500 THB or ~$53.42-$74.19).
Day 3: Fly Bangkok to Krabi, Railay Beach
Morning flight from DMK or BKK to Krabi (KBV). Budget airlines run ₹3,431-₹7,147 (~1,200-2,500 THB or ~$35.61-$74.19) one-way if booked 2 weeks ahead. Flight is 1 hour 20 minutes.
From Krabi airport, shared minivan to Ao Nang is ₹429 (~150 THB or ~$4.45). Longtail boat from Ao Nang to Railay is ₹572 (~200 THB or ~$5.94). Railay is on a peninsula, no road access, you walk 10 minutes from drop-off to the main beach.
Railay is the rock-climbing capital of Southeast Asia, but you don’t need to climb to enjoy it. East Railay is the backpacker beach with cheap bungalows and beach bars; Phra Nang is the dramatic limestone-and-white-sand beach everyone photographs.
Day 3 spend: ₹7,147-₹11,436 (~2,500-4,000 THB or ~$74.19-$118.70).
Day 4: Railay Beach + Four Islands Tour
Morning on the beach. Afternoon, book a four-islands snorkel tour from Ao Nang (₹2,859-₹4,288 (~1,000-1,500 THB or ~$29.68-$44.51) per person, 5 hours). It hits Chicken Island, Tup Islands, Poda Island, and Phra Nang Cave Beach. Snorkel gear included, lunch included, water is clear enough that even cheap tours deliver good fish.
If you’re a climber, instead of the snorkel tour, do a half-day intro climb at Railay with one of the local schools (~1,800 THB). Beginners get routed on top-rope at the beginner-friendly Diamond Cave wall.
Day 4 spend: ₹4,288-₹7,147 (~1,500-2,500 THB or ~$44.51-$74.19).
Day 5: Ferry Krabi to Phi Phi, settle in
Morning ferry from Ao Nang or Krabi town to Phi Phi Don. Two options:
- Ao Nang to Phi Phi: ₹1,001 (~350 THB or ~$10.39), 1.5 hours, slow but cheap
- Speedboat from Krabi: ₹3,431 (~1,200 THB or ~$35.61), 45 minutes
Phi Phi Don has two main beaches: Loh Dalum (party, fire shows every night) and Long Beach (quiet, north end). Stay on Long Beach if you want to sleep before midnight; stay near Loh Dalum if you came for the buckets-and-fire-spinner energy.
Afternoon, walk to Viewpoint (30 minutes uphill, free, sunset is the whole reason to come) and book tomorrow’s Maya Bay / Bamboo Island day trip (₹4,288-₹7,147 (~1,500-2,500 THB or ~$44.51-$74.19) including national park fee).
Day 5 spend: ₹3,431-₹5,718 (~1,200-2,000 THB or ~$35.61-$59.35).
Day 6: Maya Bay day trip + night fire show
Early start, 7am boat to Maya Bay. The bay reopened in 2022 with strict rules: no swimming in the main lagoon (only at the beach entrance), boats stay 50m offshore, daily visitor cap. It is still stunning, just less crowded than pre-2020 reels suggest.
Afternoon back on Phi Phi, snorkel at Shark Point or Pileh Lagoon, evening at the fire show on Loh Dalum beach. Buckets (the local whisky-and-red-bull mix in a small bucket) are ₹572-₹858 (~200-300 THB or ~$5.94-$8.90) each.
Day 6 spend: ₹5,718-₹10,006 (~2,000-3,500 THB or ~$59.35-$103.86) including the day trip.
Day 7: Ferry back to Krabi, fly to Bangkok, depart
Ferry to Krabi (₹1,001 (~350 THB or ~$10.39)), then flight back to Bangkok (₹3,431-₹7,147 (~1,200-2,500 THB or ~$35.61-$74.19)). If your international flight is from BKK the same evening, give yourself at least 4 hours buffer between landing in Bangkok and check-in at Suvarnabhumi. Domestic flights often land at DMK, which is a different airport from Suvarnabhumi; don’t confuse them when booking your return.
Day 7 spend: ₹5,718-₹10,006 (~2,000-3,500 THB or ~$59.35-$103.86).
Total 7-day spend on the ground (excluding international flights): ~₹40,025-₹62,896 (~14,000-22,000 THB or ~$415.46-$652.86) per person.

How Much Will 7 Days in Thailand Cost from India?
This is the question competitors answer and we don’t: total trip cost from India, in INR, including flights, visa, stay, food, transport, and activities. Here’s the real number.
| Line item | Budget (backpacker) | Mid-range |
|---|---|---|
| Return flight (BOM/DEL → BKK) | ₹18,000-₹25,000 (~$186.84-$259.50) | ₹28,000-₹40,000 (~$290.64-$415.20) |
| Hostel dorms (6 nights) | ₹1,715 (~600 THB or ~$17.81) | , |
| Hotel/hostel private (6 nights) | , | ₹7,147-₹10,006 (~2,500-3,500 THB or ~$74.19-$103.86) |
| Food (7 days) | ₹5,000 (~$51.90) | ₹10,000-₹14,000 (~$103.80-$145.32) |
| Domestic flights (BKK-KBV return) | ₹6,000-₹8,000 (~$62.28-$83.04) | ₹6,000-₹8,000 (~$62.28-$83.04) |
| Inter-city ferries + transfers | ₹2,500 (~$25.95) | ₹3,500 (~$36.33) |
| Activities (palaces, tours, snorkel) | ₹4,500 (~$46.71) | ₹6,500 (~$67.47) |
| SIM card + eSIM | ₹1,100 (~$11.42) | ₹1,100 (~$11.42) |
| Travel insurance (7 days) | ₹1,400 (~$14.53) | ₹1,400 (~$14.53) |
| Visa | Free (visa-free) | Free (visa-free) |
| TDAC | Free | Free |
| Misc (laundry, drinks, tips) | ₹2,000 (~$20.76) | ₹4,000 (~$41.52) |
| Total per person | ~₹65,000-₹75,000 (~$674.70-$778.50) | ~₹75,000-₹95,000 (~$778.50-$986.10) |
Solo traveller budget figure: ₹40,025-₹62,896 (~14,000-22,000 THB or ~$415.46-$652.86) on the ground ≈ ₹40,000-63,000 in INR at current rates (1 THB ≈ ₹2.87). Add ₹20,000-40,000 for round-trip flights from India, ₹1,100 (~$11.42) for SIM, and ₹1,400 (~$14.53) for insurance, and you’re in the ₹65,000-₹85,000 (~$674.70-$882.30) range most first-timers spend.
A couple sharing a private room can drop mid-range to ~₹55,000-₹65,000 (~$570.90-$674.70) per person.
Variation 1: Bangkok + Chiang Mai + Pai (Culture-Seeker Route)
Skip the islands. Bangkok (2 nights) → fly to Chiang Mai (2 nights) → minivan to Pai (2 nights) → fly back to Bangkok, depart.
What you get: Old City temples in Chiang Mai (Wat Phra Singh, Wat Chedi Luang, both free), Sunday Walking Street market, an ethical elephant sanctuary (₹8,577-₹11,436 (~3,000-4,000 THB or ~$89.03-$118.70) for a half-day, do NOT ride), Doi Suthep temple on a mountain overlooking the city.
Pai is the hippie backpacker town 3 hours north of Chiang Mai by winding minivan (₹572 (~200 THB or ~$5.94), bring seasick pills if you get car-sick). Hot springs, canyon viewpoint at sunset, night market, walking street.
This route fits if you’ve been to Thailand before, you don’t care about beaches, or you’re going in March-April when the Andaman is hot and humid.
Variation 2: Bangkok + Koh Samui + Koh Phangan (Gulf Beach Route)
Bangkok (1 night) → fly to Koh Samui (3 nights) → ferry to Koh Phangan (2 nights) → ferry back, fly to Bangkok, depart.
What you get: Chaweng Beach (developed, party), Choeng Mon (quiet, family), Ang Thong Marine Park day trip (₹5,146-₹7,147 (~1,800-2,500 THB or ~$53.42-$74.19), kayak into the emerald lagoon). On Koh Phangan, the Full Moon Party if your dates match (Haad Rin beach, ₹572 (~200 THB or ~$5.94) entry, buckets ₹858 (~300 THB or ~$8.90), every full moon night).
If the Full Moon Party isn’t happening, stay on Koh Phangan anyway for quieter northern beaches like Bottle Beach or Chaloklum.
This route fits if you’ve seen the Andaman reels and want something different, or you’re planning around a Full Moon Party.
Where to Stay
I won’t recommend a specific hostel here because the best pick depends on your route (Bangkok vs Krabi vs Phi Phi vs Chiang Mai), your dates, and your budget on the day you book. Hostel booking sites let you filter by date, neighbourhood, and price, and the rate you see on the day you book is the rate you pay. Pick somewhere with a 7.5+ rating and reviews from the last 3 months, ideally close to the action but on a side street so you sleep.
For Bangkok, the Sukhumvit area (around Asok BTS or Nana BTS) is the most convenient base. Khao San Road is more “backpacker” but it’s a long way from the BTS, the airport link, and most of the things you’d want to do.
For Krabi, Ao Nang is the backpacker base with the most options. Railay is more scenic but pricier and harder to reach.
For Phi Phi, Long Beach is quieter, Loh Dalum is the party. Pick by what you want from your nights.
For Chiang Mai, the Old City is walking distance to the temples; Nimmanhaemin is the cafe-and-coworking neighbourhood.
Subodh’s Pro Tip: Book Bangkok and one other destination, then book the rest as you go. Indian travellers get stuck in analysis paralysis trying to lock all 6 nights from home. Two nights pre-booked is enough to anchor the trip.
Getting Connected: SIM and eSIM
For most Indian travellers, a tourist SIM is the cheapest option. The two main carriers are AIS and TrueMove, both have 15-day tourist packs at ₹1,141 (~399 THB or ~$11.84) with ~15GB of data. Buy it at the airport counter on arrival (AIS, TrueMove, and dtac all have booths in the arrivals hall of both BKK and DMK) or at any 7-Eleven across the country.
If your phone supports eSIM and you’d rather not swap physical cards, an eSIM is the cleaner option. You install before you fly and have data the moment you land, no counter queue, no passport photocopy.
Subodh’s Pro Tip: Buy at the airport if you’re arriving late or tired. Buy at 7-Eleven if you arrive during the day; same SKU, fewer people in line, often ₹143-₹286 (~50-100 THB or ~$1.48-$2.97) cheaper.
For eSIM option, Get Nomad eSIM.
Common Mistakes Indians Make on a 7-Day Thailand Trip
1. Trying to cover too much. Bangkok + Phuket + Krabi + Phi Phi + Chiang Mai in 7 days means 5 transfers, 2 days enjoying each place. The Bangkok + Krabi + Phi Phi plan above is already tight; adding Phuket is what makes people hate their trip.
2. Skipping the TDAC. Thai immigration introduced the TDAC digital arrival card in 2025 and it’s now mandatory for all arrival types, including visa-free Indians. If you board without it, the airline will refuse you at check-in. Apply at tdac.immigration.go.th, takes 5 minutes, free.
3. Showing up at the Grand Palace in tank tops and shorts. You will be turned away at the gate and sent to rent a sarong for ₹572 (~200 THB or ~$5.94). Wear covered shoulders and knees from your hostel. Same dress code applies to Wat Pho, Wat Arun, and most royal temples.
4. Booking Phuket when they meant Krabi. Phuket is the bigger, more developed, more expensive island. Krabi is the dramatic-limestone-cliffs one. The two-hour ferry between them is not worth it for 7 days. Pick one.
5. Exchanging money at the airport. The airport counters give 5-8% worse rates than Bangkok city. Either use an ATM (₹629 (~220 THB or ~$6.53) withdrawal fee, but the interbank rate) or a forex card loaded with THB.
What Most Thailand Itinerary Guides Don’t Tell You
The Thailand visa-free entry for Indians is 60 days, not the 15-day visa-on-arrival that older guides mention. Since the bilateral visa-free agreement came into force, Indians get 60 days on arrival with no fee, no embassy visit, no paperwork beyond the passport. The 15-day visa-on-arrival still exists but there’s no reason to use it. Travellers report showing their passport at Bangkok immigration, getting stamped, and walking out in under 5 minutes.
November is the start of high season but also the start of jellyfish season on some islands. Beach closures for jellyfish happen sporadically on the Andaman coast from November to January. Check local signs, ask your hostel, and don’t go swimming if there are purple flags up.
The overnight bus from Bangkok to Krabi takes 12 hours and saves no money. Budget airlines on the same route cost ₹3,431 (~1,200 THB or ~$35.61) and take 1.5 hours. The bus is romantic in theory and miserable in practice, especially after a 4-hour flight from India. Unless you genuinely cannot afford the flight, fly.
Krabi is not an island. Krabi is a mainland province with stunning coastline (Railay, Ao Nang, Ton Sai). Phuket is an island. Phi Phi is an island. If you book “Krabi” accommodation expecting an island, you’ll be 30 minutes inland from the coast and confused.
Bangkok’s airport link runs until midnight, BTS until midnight, but they’re different systems. Suvarnabhumi airport (BKK) has the Airport Rail Link. Don Mueang (DMK) doesn’t. DMK is connected by bus and taxi only. Most budget airlines (AirAsia, Nok Air, Thai Lion) fly out of DMK, which catches first-timers off guard when they’re returning home.

Thailand 7-Day Itinerary FAQ
Is 7 days enough for Thailand?
Yes, for Bangkok plus one island region. No, if you want to cover both the Andaman coast (Phuket/Krabi/Phi Phi) and the Gulf islands (Koh Samui/Koh Phangan) in one trip.
What is the cheapest way to do a 7-day Thailand trip from India?
Fly into Bangkok on a budget airline (AirAsia, Scoot, Thai Vietjet, IndiGo) for ₹15,000-₹20,000 (~$155.70-$207.60) round trip, stay in hostel dorms, eat street food, take trains and buses for intercity travel. Realistic floor is ₹55,000 (~$570.90) all-in if you’re disciplined.
Do Indians need a visa for Thailand?
No, not for stays under 60 days. Thailand and India have a bilateral visa-free agreement. You need a passport with 6 months validity, a return ticket, and proof of funds (₹20,000 (~$207.60) equivalent per person is the unofficial rule; immigration rarely asks). You also need to fill out the TDAC digital arrival card before boarding.
Which is better for first-timers, Phuket or Krabi?
Krabi. Phuket is more developed, more expensive, more crowded, and the beaches are not better. Railay and the Phi Phi day trips from Krabi are the highlights of the Andaman. Phuket makes sense as a beach resort base if you’re travelling as a family or want nightlife on the island itself.
Is Bangkok safe for solo Indian travellers?
Yes. Bangkok is one of the safest big cities in Southeast Asia for solo travellers. The usual caution applies: watch your pockets in crowded night markets, use Grab (the ride-hailing app) over street tuk-tuks for fixed prices, and don’t exchange money at the airport. For more on safety specifics, see the safest cities for solo female travellers and the SEA scam prevention guide.
What is the best time of year for a 7-day Thailand trip?
November to February. Cool, dry, low humidity. March-May is hot (40°C+ in Bangkok), June-October is rainy with daily downpours but fewer tourists and lower prices. The full Thailand rainy season breakdown explains the trade-offs month by month.
How much cash should I carry for 7 days?
Budget travellers can do it on ₹42,884 (~15,000 THB or ~$445.13) cash plus a forex card for the rest. Mid-range travellers should carry ₹85,767 (~30,000 THB or ~$890.26) cash and use cards for hotels and flights. ATMs charge a ₹629 (~220 THB or ~$6.53) fee per withdrawal, so withdraw larger amounts less often. For a deeper daily budget, see average spend in Thailand per day.
Subodh’s Take
Seven days in Thailand is the right amount of time for one region and Bangkok, not for the whole country. Pick the Andaman route unless you have a specific reason for the Gulf or the north. Book your first two nights before you fly, then figure out the rest from a hostel common room with better wifi than your decision-making at home. The biggest mistake is over-planning, not under-planning. You’ll have a great trip even if you skip one of the days in this itinerary.
