Day 1. Arrive Yangon, Settle In, Shwedagon at Sunset
Yangon’s airport (RGN) is in the city, 30–60 minutes from downtown depending on traffic. A taxi into the centre runs 80,000–1,20,000 MMK. Grab is restricted and rarely works in Myanmar, so plan to use a taxi counter or hotel pickup.
After dropping your bag, head straight to Shwedagon Pagoda for sunset. It is the single most important sight in the country and the gold on the stupa at dusk is something you’ll remember for years. Entry for foreigners is 25,000 MMK.

Option 1. Cheapest: Standard Overnight Bus
Standard buses run 1,20,000–1,50,000 MMK, take 8–9 hours, and leave Yangon’s highway bus terminal in the evening. They are not comfortable. Seats recline but do not lie flat. The bus stops twice for food and toilet. Most travellers sleep in spite of it, not because of it.

JJ Express and a few other VIP operators run 2,00,000–2,50,000 MMK, leave around 7 PM, and arrive Bagan around 4 AM. Seats recline further, the bus is cleaner, and air-con works. Worth the extra 50,000–80,000 MMK if your budget allows.

Option 3. Fastest: Yangon to Bagan Flight
Flight is 45 minutes and 1,50,000–2,50,000 MMK with airlines like Air KBZ, Golden Myanmar, or Myanmar National Airlines. Book 2–3 days ahead in high season (Nov-Feb). Flying saves a full night and arrives in time for Bagan sunrise.

Day 4. Bagan: Sunrise, Temples, E-Bike
Arrive in Bagan before dawn. Drop your bag at the hostel and head to a sunrise viewpoint (Bulethi or Shwesandaw are the standard ones, but check the local rules on which are currently open to climbers).

Adapting This Itinerary: 5 Days or 10 Days
5-day version
Skip the second Yangon day and the second Bagan day. Fly Yangon → Bagan directly on Day 1, do Bagan in a day and a half, fly Bagan → Inle, do Inle in a day and a half, fly back to Yangon and out. Tight, but works if you’re short on leave.
10-day version
Add Mandalay between Bagan and Inle (5-hour bus, 1,00,000–1,50,000 MMK). Mandalay has the U Bein Bridge (world’s longest teak footbridge), Mandalay Hill at sunset, and several day-trip options including Mingun. Two nights there is enough.

Myanmar has a wet season (roughly June to October) where Bagan’s dirt roads turn to mud and the lake gets choppy. November to February is peak season, comfortable temperatures, clear skies. March to May is brutally hot in Bagan, often above 40°C.
Politically, conditions can change quickly. The standard Yangon. Bagan. Inle axis has remained open to tourists in recent reporting, but check the MEA advisory and current news on the day you fly. If your dates are flexible, a March trip is cheaper but punishingly hot.

Myanmar is the most rewarding and most frustrating country in Southeast Asia right now. The temples of Bagan at sunrise are worth every rupee and every logistical headache. The cash-only economy, the e-Visa uncertainty, and the lack of UPI make it harder than Thailand or Vietnam. But that’s also why it still feels like real travel, not a packaged route. Go in shoulder season (October or March) for fewer crowds, carry more cash than you think you need, and don’t try to do too much in seven days. Three places done well beats four places rushed.
