Myanmar Corridors Explained: The Overland Routes Every Budget Indian Traveler Should Know
✅ Last verified on-the-ground: July 2026
Four overland corridors connect Myanmar to India, Thailand, China, and Bangladesh. For Indian budget travelers, the India-Myanmar (Tamu-Moreh) and Thai-Myanmar (Mae Sot-Myawaddy) corridors are the most practical. This guide covers the BCIM context, border crossing logistics, costs, and when to skip a route. You may also find Mandalay Offbeat Hsipaw Pyin Oo Lwin Kalaw Trek useful for this trip.
Before we get into the corridors, the most important sentence in this guide: Myanmar’s safety situation is highly variable in 2026. Several border regions have seen periodic tension. The e-Visa ($50 USD, 28 days) is the only reliable visa option for Indians — Visa on Arrival remains suspended. Check the Indian MEA travel advisory at mea.gov.in the week you book your flight, then check it again a week before departure. Travellers report large parts of the country (Yangon, Bagan, Inle, Mandalay city) functioning normally for tourism, but the corridor advice below assumes you are re-verifying against the current advisory before you leave. The Four Corridors That Matter
Myanmar sits at a junction where India, Thailand, China, Bangladesh and Laos all meet (Laos only via the Mekong, no direct land border). For an Indian backpacker, four corridors are worth knowing: For related planning, see our guide on Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh.
- India-Myanmar corridor (Tamu-Moreh, into Sagaing/Mandalay)
- Thai-Myanmar corridor (Myawaddy-Mae Sot, the main overland from Bangkok; also Mae Sai-Tachileik for the Golden Triangle)
- China-Myanmar corridor (Muse-Ruili, mostly closed to tourists in 2026; covered so you know what to skip)
- The BCIM Economic Corridor (a policy umbrella covering routes 1-3 plus a Bangladesh arm, explained below) You may also find Hue to Hoi an useful for this trip.
A fifth, the Bangladesh-Myanmar corridor (Teknaf-Maungdaw/Rohingya region), is closed to tourists and should stay off your itinerary in 2026.
The BCIM Economic Corridor: Why It Matters to a Backpacker
The BCIM was revived as a formal multilateral forum in 2013, with a highway concept linking Kunming (China) to Kolkata (India) via Mandalay, Dhaka and Imphal. In practice for a budget traveller, three concrete things have come out of it:
- Tamu-Moreh road upgrades. The 110 km stretch from Imphal to the border has been widened in stages. Shared jeeps from Imphal to Moreh and onward into Tamu are now smoother, faster, and cheaper than they were a decade ago.
- The India-Myanmar-Thailand trilateral highway. A planned extension that would, in theory, let you roll from Imphal through Mandalay and down to Mae Sot, all on asphalt. As of 2026, sections inside Myanmar are still two-lane, but the route is drivable and used by Indian tour buses.
- Cross-border trade, which means SIMs and ATMs. Because Tamu and Muse are busy trading posts, both have working money changers, working SIM vendors, and Indian-roaming-friendly cell coverage right at the border. You don’t need to arrive with a full plan.
The geopolitical side of BCIM is its own article, and not what backpackers come here for. Just know: when a news headline says “BCIM corridor progress,” read it as “the road you’ll take is getting better.”
India-Myanmar Corridor: Tamu-Moreh to Mandalay
This is the only land border between India and Myanmar, and the cheapest way for an Indian passport holder to enter the country without flying.
How to get there
Imphal (Manipur) to Moreh is about 110 km, 4-5 hours by shared jeep or state bus. The road is decent until the last 20 km, which has been a construction zone for years. Shared jeeps leave Imphal’s Sangai Bazaar / Minuthong area; budget ₹600-₹800 (~$6.22-$8.29) for the seat.
Moreh to Tamu is a 30-minute drive on the Indian side. You walk across the Friendship Bridge with your passport, e-Visa printout, and two photos. Myanmar immigration stamps you in.
Tamu to Mandalay is a long overnight bus journey through the Sagaing hills. Buses are basic (no AC, sometimes no assigned seats), and the road winds through some of Myanmar’s most scenic hill territory. Bring layers: the bus is cold at altitude, hot in the valleys.
Costs
| Leg | Mode | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Imphal to Moreh | Shared jeep | ₹700 (~$7.25) |
| Moreh to Tamu (border) | Shared sumo | ₹200 (~$2.07) |
| Tamu to Mandalay | Night bus | 18,000-25,000 MMK |
| Mandalay to Bagan | Day bus | 15,000-22,000 MMK |
| Bagan to Yangon | Night bus | 15,000-22,000 MMK |
Dorm beds and hostel prices vary widely by season and availability; budget travellers should compare current listings on hostel aggregators before booking.
The Reality Check
The Tamu-Moreh crossing is technically open, but Manipur has been under disturbed conditions since 2023. Re-check the Indian MEA advisory and the Manipur state police advisory the day before you leave Imphal. Do not wing this one.
Thai-Myanmar Corridor: Mae Sot-Myawaddy and Mae Sai-Tachileik
For most Indian backpackers, this is the corridor that matters, because it links Myanmar to Thailand’s overland trail (Bangkok to Chiang Mai to Pai to Mae Hong Son) and onward to Laos.
Mae Sot-Myawaddy (the main one)
Bangkok to Mae Sot is a direct 8-9 hour government bus. From Mae Sot, the Friendship Bridge crossing into Myawaddy is roughly 4-5 km from town centre, tuk-tuk or songthaew for around. Myanmar immigration is on the far side; e-Visa printout and passport gets you stamped in. The whole crossing, including queuing, runs 45-90 minutes on a normal day.
From Myawaddy, buses run south to Hpa-an (the capital of Kayin State, 4 hours, base for some of the country’s best caves and limestone karst scenery) and onward to Yangon (another 7-8 hours). Most travellers overnight in Hpa-an.
Mae Sai-Tachileik (the Golden Triangle one)
Chiang Rai to Mae Sai is a 1-hour songthaew. Cross into Tachileik with a pre-arranged e-Visa, then either stay overnight (Tachileik has decent guesthouses and a casino if that’s your thing) or continue 4-5 hours east to Kengtung, the most intact Shan State town you can reach without flying.
From Kengtung, you cannot currently continue overland to Laos or China. You have to fly or backtrack to Tachileik and re-enter Thailand.
Costs
| Leg | Mode | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Bangkok to Mae Sot | VIP bus | 400- |
| Mae Sot to Myawaddy | Songthaew | 50- |
| Myawaddy to Hpa-an | Local bus | 8,000-12,000 MMK |
| Hpa-an to Yangon | Night bus | 12,000-18,000 MMK |
| Chiang Rai to Mae Sai | Songthaew | 40- |
| Mae Sai to Tachileik | Walk across + tuk-tuk | 30- |
China-Myanmar Corridor: Muse-Ruili
This is the one most Indian travellers Google and few use in 2026.
The Muse-Ruili crossing in northern Shan State is one of the busiest land borders in mainland Southeast Asia by trade volume, and it physically connects Kunming (Yunnan) to Mandalay. If you could use it as a tourist, your route from India would be: fly Delhi to Kunming via a Yunnan hub, bus down to Ruili, cross to Muse, then bus south through Mandalay to Bagan and Yangon.
In 2026, this crossing is closed to most foreign tourists. Chinese visas still get issued, and the border sees heavy truck traffic, but Myanmar immigration on the Muse side has not been consistently stamping tourists in or out since the political shift. Travellers report sporadic openings, often tied to specific travel agencies with Chinese group-tour licences.
For an Indian passport holder, this means: budget 0 for the China-Myanmar crossing in your planning. If Muse reopens to individual tourists later in 2026, you can add it, but build the rest of your Myanmar trip assuming you’ll enter from Yangon by air and exit overland to Thailand.
Border Crossing Specifics for Indian Passport Holders
For a full comparison of all Southeast Asian land borders, see our overland border crossings guide.
- Tamu-Moreh: Visa must be arranged in advance (e-Visa, ₹4,826 (~50 USD), 28 days). Photo and printout required. Crossing closes at sunset on the Indian side. Money changers in Tamu accept INR cash at poor rates; ATMs on the Myanmar side are hit-or-miss.
- Myawaddy-Mae Sot: Same e-Visa rules. Photo, printout, and proof of onward travel (bus ticket photo on phone is fine) make the process smoother. The Myanmar side has working ATMs. Both sides accept Thai baht cash.
- Mae Sai-Tachileik: e-Visa must be arranged in advance, same as other Myanmar land borders. The casino economy means there are ATMs and money changers even on the Myanmar side.
- Muse-Ruili: Effectively closed to tourists.
Common scams to watch for: at Myawaddy, unofficial “helpers” at the bridge asking for tips to speed you through. Just walk; the process is straightforward. At Tamu, motorbike riders offering to take shortcuts around the queue. Walk the queue.
Operating hours: most Myanmar land borders close for lunch (roughly 11:30-13:00) and shut at 17:00. Plan to cross before noon.
Indian Passport Specifics
You will need:
- Passport valid 6+ months
- Printed e-Visa approval letter
- Two passport photos (Myanmar e-Visa standard size, roughly 4.6 x 3.8 cm)
- Proof of onward travel (bus or flight ticket)
- ₹19,306-₹28,959 (~200-300 USD) in clean, unmarked USD bills for initial expenses (the dollar is the unofficial second currency in Myanmar)
- A printed accommodation booking for your first night
For overland problems, consult your country’s consular services for Sagaing and Shan State issues.
The single most useful pre-trip step: download the e-Visa PDF to your phone, email it to yourself, and take a screenshot. Printouts do get lost; redundancy saves the day.
When NOT to Take These Routes
- Monsoon (June to September): the Tamu-Moreh corridor sees landslides; the Sagaing hills bus can take 18-20 hours instead of 14. Avoid if your schedule is tight.
- Late October and November: post-monsoon road repairs on the India side make Imphal-Moreh bumpy. Same detour advice.
- Any time the MEA advisory is at “Reconsider travel” or worse: skip Myanmar entirely. Yangon and the standard tourist trail are usually fine, but if the advisory is escalated, don’t be the backpacker who tests it.
- Festival weeks at home: Indian public holidays like Diwali see Imphal-Moreh jeeps fully booked 3 days out. Book the day before.
Getting Connected
Cell coverage is good in towns and along the main bus corridors, but dead zones exist on the Tamu-Mandalay stretch (the Sagaing hills block signal for 30-40 minute stretches). On the Myanmar side, tourist SIMs are sold at the airport or in town for around 15,000-20,000 MMK. If you’d rather not queue at the Yangon airport kiosk, a regional eSIM provider can deliver data before you board your flight from Delhi.
FAQ
Can I enter Myanmar by land with an Indian passport? Yes, at Tamu-Moreh (India side) and Myawaddy-Mae Sot or Mae Sai-Tachileik (Thailand side). You need the e-Visa in advance; it cannot be issued at any of these borders in 2026.
Is the BCIM Economic Corridor open to tourists? The BCIM is a policy/infrastructure project, not a single border crossing. The road segments that fall under BCIM planning (especially Tamu-Moreh and the planned India-Myanmar-Thailand trilateral highway) are open where Myanmar’s own situation allows.
How much cash should I carry for Myanmar? ₹19,306-₹28,959 (~200-300 USD) plus a working forex card. Myanmar’s banking system has been intermittent since 2021; ATMs in Yangon and Mandalay work most days, but small-town ATMs (Tamu, Tachileik, Hpa-an) often don’t. USD bills in pristine condition trade at better rates than torn or marked notes.
Is the Tamu-Moreh crossing safe right now? Check the MEA advisory before you book. Manipur-specific tensions have spilled across the border area in past years. The crossing itself is open, but the road to it from Imphal passes through districts where the situation changes.
Can I cross from Myanmar into China at Muse? Effectively no in 2026 for individual tourists. Trade traffic flows, but Myanmar immigration on the Muse side isn’t stamping foreign tourists. Plan your China connection via Kunming by air.
Do Indian debit cards work at Myanmar ATMs? Some do, most days, in Yangon and Mandalay. Treat ATM cash as a backup. Carry USD.
What is the cheapest overland route into Myanmar from India? Imphal to Moreh to Tamu to Mandalay by shared jeep and bus, around ₹3,500 (~$36.26) total if you catch the right connections.
Subodh’s Take
The honest picture for an Indian backpacker in 2026 is: Yangon by air is still the most reliable entry, the Mae Sot-Myawaddy crossing is the smoothest overland exit into Thailand, and the India-Myanmar border at Tamu-Moreh works but depends on what Manipur’s situation looks like that month. Plan two corridors (in and out), verify against MEA the week you fly, and you’ll have a smooth trip.
