Myanmar 10-Day Itinerary: Yangon → Mandalay → Bagan → Inle Lake (2026)
Important before you read further: Myanmar is currently under an active armed conflict situation. Several regions, including parts of Shan State (around Inle Lake), Kachin State, Chin State, Rakhine State, and border regions, see periodic tension and have travel advisories against non-essential travel. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs maintains a live advisory at mea.gov.in and the Myanmar government itself publishes region-specific notices. Check both before booking flights. The itinerary below covers the four main backpacker hubs (Yangon, Mandalay, Bagan, Inle) which historically have been accessible, but “accessible historically” is not the same as “safe to visit right now.” Verify the current ground situation before committing money. This guide assumes the situation allows the route; if it does not, the FAQ below covers alternative destinations. For related planning, see our guide on Sea Backpacking Hub.

Day-by-Day Route: 10 Days
This is the canonical Burmese backpacker loop. Four cities, three flights, one optional overnight bus, and a sunrise boat ride you’ll talk about for years.
Day 1: Arrive Yangon, City Walking
Yangon’s grid is walkable and the street food is the cheapest of the four stops. Spend the day recovering from the flight, wandering colonial streets around Sule Pagoda, and ending at Shwedagon Pagoda for sunset. Entry to Shwedagon for foreigners is 10,000 MMK, foreigners-only lifts exist, dress code is strict (covered shoulders and knees, shoes off everywhere).
Subodh’s Pro Tip: Most travellers land at Yangon International mid-afternoon. Take a taxi (Grab is banned in Myanmar, so it’s the local cab apps or airport taxi counters) to your hostel in Chinatown or around 19th Street for the night-market grilled skewers. Your first meal should cost 2,000 to 4,000 MMK if you eat where locals eat.
Day 2: Yangon → Mandalay (Fly or Overnight Bus)
Two realistic options. The flight is 1 hour 20 minutes and saves a full day. The overnight bus is 9 to 11 hours, costs 18,000 to 25,000 MMK for VIP class, and is an experience in itself (curtains drawn, snoring, mysterious stops at 3 AM for noodle soup).
Subodh’s Pro Tip: Pick the flight if you have exactly 10 days. Pick the overnight bus if you have 11+ and want the road-story. Mandalay itself is not Myanmar’s most exciting stop; it is the transport hub for Bagan and the cultural capital for Mandalay Hill, Mahamuni Pagoda, and the wooden monastery at Shwe In Bin Kyaung. Two nights is enough.
Days 3 to 5: Mandalay + Bagan
Spend Day 3 in Mandalay proper (Mandalay Hill at sunrise, the gold-leaf application at Mahamuni, the former royal capital of Inwa by horse-cart), then catch the 4-hour air-con bus or a 1-hour flight to Bagan on Day 4. Compare prices on 12go.
Bagan is where the route changes tone. The plain has over 2,000 surviving temples and pagodas, most climbable, many free, all photogenic. Plan at least 2 full days: one for the sunrise temple (the standard pick is Shwesandaw, but travellers report Buledi and some of the smaller eastern ones are less crowded), one for the full-day temple loop by e-bike, one for the sunset over the Ayeyarwaddy River.
Subodh’s Pro Tip: Buy the Bagan Archaeological Zone ticket (25,000 MMK) at the entry checkpoint. Without it you cannot legally climb the main temples. The e-bike rental in New Bagan is 8,000 to 12,000 MMK per day; the e-bike lets you cover 30+ temples in a day. Helmets are not optional by law and the roads are dusty.
Days 6 to 8: Bagan → Inle Lake
Fly Bagan to Heho (1 hour, ~35,000 MMK one-way with Air KBZ, Myanmar National Airlines, or Air Thanlwin), then take the 1-hour taxi down to Nyaung Shwe, the gateway town for Inle Lake. The flight is the standard pick; the overland route (Bagan bus to Taunggyi, then transfer) is 9+ hours and saves little money.
Inle Lake is the calmest of the four stops. The lake itself has stilt-house villages, the famous Intha leg-rowing fishermen, floating gardens, and the photogenic stupas at Indein. Plan a full-day boat tour (15,000 to 25,000 MMK per boat, shared with other travellers or private), a half-day cycling around the lake shore, and a visit to one of the vineyards on the eastern shore for a sunset glass.
Subodh’s Pro Tip: The morning boat tour starts around 6:30 AM and finishes by 2 PM. The lake surface is glass-flat at that hour and the light on the fishermen is the whole reason people fly here. Do not book the boat from your hostel without checking the route; some operators skip the best stupa compound. Ask which stops are included and confirm Indein is one of them.
Days 9 to 10: Inle → Yangon, Fly Out
Fly Heho to Yangon (1 hour 20 minutes, ~40,000 MMK), then either fly out the same evening from Yangon International or stay one more night in Yangon for a repeat Shwedagon sunset and a final bowl of Mohinga (the fish-noodle soup that is Myanmar’s national dish) at a tea shop.
How to Trim This to 5 or 7 Days
The 10-day plan above is the comfort version. Two of the four stops are skippable on shorter trips.
5-day version: Skip Mandalay entirely. Yangon (1 night) → fly to Bagan (2 nights) → fly to Inle (2 nights) → fly out from Heho via Yangon. The Mandalay stop is the most expendable because Bagan has a higher density of “Myanmar bucket-list” moments and Inle is a different category of experience. This is the right shape for a 5-day Myanmar trip.
7-day version: Keep Mandalay, drop one Bagan night. Yangon (1 night) → Mandalay (2 nights) → Bagan (2 nights) → Inle (2 nights). This is the standard Bananarchy-recommended shape when travellers ask for a myanmar 7 day itinerary.
For a longer trip with side stops, our mandalay-offbeat guide covers the Kalaw → Inle trek (3 days, 45 km, the only real hike in the standard loop) and Hsipaw in northern Shan State.
What to Eat in Myanmar
Burmese food is rice-and-curry driven, with regional twists. The four dishes you should try at least once:
- Mohinga: fish-noodle soup, breakfast staple, eaten everywhere. Cost: 1,500 to 3,000 MMK at tea shops, up to 5,000 MMK at tourist restaurants. Best eaten at a sidewalk stall with strong tea.
- Lahpet Thoke: fermented tea-leaf salad. Burmese national dish. 2,000 to 4,000 MMK. Add tomato and crunchy beans for the standard mix.
- Shan-style noodles: the rice-noodle dish with peanuts, tomato, and a light broth that comes from eastern Myanmar. 2,000 to 3,500 MMK. Heavier on Inle Lake.
- Grilled skewers at 19th Street, Yangon: the Chinatown night market is the cheap-eats heart of the country. 500 MMK per skewer, 5,000 MMK buys you a full meal.
For local Burmese dining, the shortlist has Unique Myanmar Restaurant (rating 4.2), a Yangon spot with the standard menu of mohinga, lahpet thoke, and curries at local prices.
For a dal-chawal break or strict-veg nights, The Moon Vegetarian Restaurant (rating 4.4) in Yangon is the safe Indian-food fallback. Vegetarian Burmese restaurants are common in Yangon and Mandalay; in Bagan and Nyaung Shwe the selection thins out and you’ll find yourself eating more rice-and-veg curries at the tourist guesthouses.
How to Get Between Cities
All four legs of this route have both road and air options.
| Leg | Cheapest | Best | Fastest |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yangon → Mandalay | 18,000 to 25,000 MMK (overnight VIP bus) | 35,000 to 50,000 MMK (flight, 1h20) | Same flight |
| Mandalay → Bagan | 8,000 to 12,000 MMK (4h air-con bus) | 12,000 to 15,000 MMK (flight, 1h) | Same flight |
| Bagan → Inle | 25,000 to 35,000 MMK (9h bus via Taunggyi) | 35,000 to 45,000 MMK (flight to Heho, 1h) | Same flight |
| Inle → Yangon | 25,000 to 35,000 MMK (9h bus) | 40,000 to 55,000 MMK (flight, 1h20) | Same flight |
Compare prices on 12go for the bus and flight combinations. The flight-only total for the three internal legs is 110,000 to 150,000 MMK (₹5,300 (~$55.01) to ₹7,200 (~$74.74)). The bus-only total is 76,000 to 107,000 MMK (₹3,670 (~$38.09) to ₹5,170 (~$53.66)) but adds 25+ hours of travel time.
Myanmar Visa for Indian Passport Holders
Indian citizens need a visa before arrival. The Myanmar e-Visa system at evisa.moip.gov.mm issues a 28-day Tourist Visa for ₹4,817 (~50 USD). Processing is normally 3 working days. The visa is single-entry.
Documents required:
- Passport with 6+ months validity
- Scanned passport bio page
- Passport-style photo (JPEG, white background)
- Credit or debit card for the fee
The fee is non-refundable. Travellers report the website has occasional outages; apply at least 2 weeks before departure to leave room for retries.
If you are entering overland from Thailand (Mae Sot → Myawaddy, or Ranong → Kawthaung), you can also get a Visa-on-Arrival at the land border for the same ₹4,817 (~50 USD), but the e-Visa is faster and avoids the border queue.
Subodh’s Pro Tip: The Myanmar e-Visa is one of the more expensive in the region (Cambodia is ₹2,890 (~30 USD), Laos is ₹2,890 (~30 USD), Vietnam is ₹2,408 (~25 USD)). Pay it once and use the full 28 days. Travellers who try to re-enter after a side trip to Thailand report that re-entry triggers a fresh visa fee and queue.
When NOT to Take This Route
Three periods make this route uncomfortable or unsafe.
- May to October (monsoon): Roads flood, boats cancel, Bagan’s sunrise is clouded 80% of mornings. Skip this window entirely if your goal is temple photography.
- August to October (Inle flooding risk): Heavy rain years see the lake level rise enough to submerge stilt-house villages and disrupt boat routes. Check the local news a week before.
- Active conflict periods: This is the harder one. Several parts of Myanmar have ongoing armed conflict between the military and ethnic armed organisations. The Indian MEA advisory at mea.gov.in, the UK FCDO, and the US State Department all maintain region-specific advice. Yangon, Mandalay, Bagan, and Nyaung Shwe/Inle have historically been accessible, but historic accessibility is not a guarantee. Check before you book flights.
If the situation makes the route unsafe, the alternative is to substitute Cambodia or Laos for the same shape of trip (temples, slow boat, beach ending). We cover that swap on our Inle Lake entry on the Yangon to Chiang Mai route.
Getting Connected
Mobile coverage in Myanmar is reliable in the four hub cities and along the Yangon-Mandalay highway. Outside the main towns expect 2G or no signal, particularly on the Bagan-to-Inle overland route through Shan State.
The two main operators are MPT and Telenor (now Ooredoo after a brand swap, check the current name). Both sell tourist SIMs at Yangon airport counters for 15,000 to 25,000 MMK with 5 to 10 GB of data. Bring your passport. SIM registration is mandatory by law and takes 10 minutes.
For a physical-SIM alternative that you can buy before you fly, Get Nomad eSIM covers Myanmar on most regional plans, which means you have data the moment you land instead of standing in the airport SIM queue.
What Does 10 Days in Myanmar Cost?
A realistic backpacker budget for the 10-day loop in mid-2026:
- Hostel dorms: 12,000 to 25,000 MMK per night (₹580 (~$6.02) to ₹1,200 (~$12.46))
- Private rooms (budget guesthouse): 30,000 to 60,000 MMK per night (₹1,450 (~$15.05) to ₹2,900 (~$30.10))
- Meals (street food + one tourist meal per day): 15,000 to 25,000 MMK per day (₹725 (~$7.53) to ₹1,200 (~$12.46))
- Internal flights (3 legs): 110,000 to 150,000 MMK (₹5,300 (~$55.01) to ₹7,200 (~$74.74))
- Bagan zone ticket: 25,000 MMK (₹1,200 (~$12.46))
- Boat tour at Inle: 20,000 to 25,000 MMK (₹970 (~$10.07) to ₹1,200 (~$12.46))
- SIM card: 20,000 MMK (₹970 (~$10.07))
Total ground cost, excluding international flight: 350,000 to 600,000 MMK (₹16,900 to ₹29,000) for 10 days.
Add visa (50 USD = ₹4,800), international flights from India (return to Yangon is roughly ₹22,000 (~$228.36) to ₹35,000 (~$363.30) from Delhi or Mumbai depending on season), and travel insurance. A mid-range backpacker lands in the ₹50,000 (~$519) to ₹75,000 (~$778.50) total bracket for 10 days including flights.

FAQ
Is Myanmar safe for Indian backpackers in 2026?
The four hub cities (Yangon, Mandalay, Bagan, Nyaung Shwe/Inle) have historically been accessible to foreign travellers, but Myanmar is currently in an active armed conflict situation. The Indian MEA advisory at mea.gov.in is the authoritative source for region-by-region safety. Do not rely on travel-blog posts written before the current escalation. Check the advisory on the day you book flights and again the week before departure.
Can I do this route without flying?
Yes, but it doubles the time. The all-bus version is 25+ hours of travel on top of sightseeing. The bus is fine for one leg (Mandalay to Bagan is a standard 4-hour ride), but Yangon to Mandalay (9 to 11 hours) and Bagan to Inle (9+ hours) eat full days that are better spent in the cities.
Should I book domestic flights in advance?
Book at least a week ahead for the Bagan → Heho leg (Inle access) and the Heho → Yangon return; both have small aircraft (under 100 seats) and fill up in peak season. The other two legs have more capacity and can be booked 2 to 3 days out.
How much cash should I carry?
Myanmar runs on cash. Credit cards are accepted only at high-end hotels in Yangon and Mandalay. ATMs are available in the four hub cities but charge 5,000 MMK per withdrawal (₹240 (~$2.49)) and have a daily limit. Carry enough USD to exchange as backup and budget 10,000 to 15,000 MMK per day in kyat.
Can I extend this trip with a side stop?
Yes. The standard extensions are Ngapali Beach (flight from Yangon, 1 hour) and the Kalaw → Inle trek (3 days). Our beaches guide covers Ngapali and the other coastal options, and our Mandalay-offbeat guide covers the trek. Adding either turns the 10-day plan into 12 to 14 days.
What happens if a flight gets cancelled due to conflict?
Domestic airlines sometimes cancel on short notice during periods of instability. Buy flights on credit cards with trip-interruption coverage, keep flexible hotel bookings for the first and last nights, and have a Plan B (overland route or a flight into Thailand as a fallback exit). The Mae Sot → Myawaddy land border to Thailand has historically stayed open when domestic flights cancelled.
Subodh’s Take
The 10-day Myanmar loop is one of the few Southeast Asian itineraries that still feels under-travelled. The temples at Bagan, the lake at Inle, and the evening tea shops in Yangon are the same as they were a decade ago, and the cost is still half of what you’d pay in Thailand. What changed is the ground situation: this route was a backpacker default in 2018, and in 2026 it requires a current advisory check before you book. Read the MEA page, weigh the risk, and only fly in if the four hub cities are clear. If they are, this is the cheapest and quietest “big four” itinerary left in the region.
