The Honest Pitch: Can You Do This in 2 Weeks?

Yes, but only if you accept two tradeoffs up front. First, you will skip half the things each country is famous for. Halong Bay gets a drive-by view from the bus window. Vang Vieng’s lagoons get one afternoon. Pai’s hippie vibe gets skipped entirely. Second, you will move every 2–3 nights, which means you will not rest properly until Bangkok.

For most Indian backpackers, the realistic version of this trip is: 3 nights in northern Vietnam, 1 night on the road into Laos, 2–3 nights around Vientiane or Vang Vieng, 2 nights in Luang Prabang, then a sleeper train into Thailand with a stop in Chiang Mai before finishing in Bangkok. That is 10 moving days and 4 actual rest days, which is the floor for not hating your life by day 12.

If you have 16–18 days, take them. The difference between rushing and not rushing this corridor is the difference between a trip you talk about for years and one where you burn out before reaching Bangkok.

Option 1: Cheapest (Buses + Sleeper Train, ~₹22,000 (~$228.21))

This is the route every budget blog has recommended since 2014, and it still works because the transport monopoly on this corridor is comfortable enough that you do not need to fly.

Hanoi to Vinh (250 km, 7 hours, sleeper bus): ₹921 (~250,000 VND or ~$9.55). Most operators leave from Giap Bat or Nuoc Ngam station around 19:00 and arrive at 02:00. The road is fine, the buses recline almost flat, and you will save a Hanoi hotel night by sleeping on board. Book the day before from any agency in Hanoi’s Old Quarter.

Vinh to Cau Treo border (150 km, 4 hours, minivan): ₹663 (~180,000 VND or ~$6.88). Shared minivans run in the morning from Vinh city centre to the border. This is the Vietnam side of the Nam Phao. Cau Treo crossing into Laos.

Cau Treo to Thakhek (Laos side, 4–5 hours, songthaew or shared tuk-tuk): ₹345 (~80,000 LAK or ~$3.58). You get stitched onto whatever vehicle the driver has going. Expect locals, chickens, and your pack on the roof.

Thakhek to Vientiane (340 km, 8 hours, sleeper bus): ₹647 (~150,000 LAK or ~$6.71). Night buses leave around 19:00. The road through the karst mountains is one of the prettiest in mainland SEA. Bring a buff for the AC, which runs at full blast.

Vientiane to Bangkok (overnight train via Nong Khai, 14 hours, sleeper berth): ₹4,307 (~1,500 THB or ~$44.68) for a 2nd-class air-con sleeper. This is the single best sleeper train in Southeast Asia and worth the entire trip on its own. Book 2–3 days ahead at Vientiane railway station or through Book on 12go.

Total land cost: roughly ₹22,000 (~$228.21) if you eat only at markets and sleep in dorms. Realistic floor with one private room per week: ₹30,000-₹35,000 (~$311.19-$363.06).

Option 2: Best Experience (Slow Boat + Sleeper Train, ~₹32,000 (~$331.94))

If you have done the cheap version before or you want the version your friends will be jealous of, swap the Vinh → Vientiane overland slog for the slow boat down the Mekong. This route goes through Huế and Hội An first, takes longer, costs more, but gives you two of Vietnam’s best cities plus the Mekong river journey, which is a genuine once-in-a-life thing.

Hanoi to Huế (sleeper train, 12 hours): ₹1,657 (~450,000 VND or ~$17.19) for a soft sleeper 4-berth. Take the SE3 or SE7 from Hanoi station, leave around 22:00, wake up in Huế at 10:00 the next morning. The Hai Van Pass section between Huế and Đà Nẵng is the prettiest rail stretch in Vietnam. Do not sleep through it.

Huế to Hội An (130 km, 3 hours, local bus or private transfer): ₹442 (~120,000 VND or ~$4.58) on a public bus, or ₹2,210 (~600,000 VND or ~$22.92) for a private car with stops at Lang Co beach and the Marble Mountains. The private car is worth it on your first trip. See our Huế to Hội An guide for the full breakdown.

Hội An to Pakse (Laos) via the Lao Bao border (long travel day, 12–14 hours total): ₹1,842 (~500,000 VND or ~$19.10) to the border by bus, then ₹647 (~150,000 LAK or ~$6.71) Pakse side. Note: the Lao Bao crossing has been restricted for foreign overland traffic in recent years - verify current status with your Vietnamese travel agency before relying on this route.

Pakse to Luang Prabang (slow boat, 2 days, 1 night homestay on Don Det / 4,000 islands): The slow boat from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang is the famous one. The Pakse to Huay Xai leg is the bottleneck. You either fly Pakse → Luang Prabang (45 minutes, ~₹8,676 (~90 USD)) or you go by boat upriver to Savannakhet, then overland to Vientiane, then a second flight. For 2 weeks, fly.

Luang Prabang to Bangkok (direct flight, 2 hours 10 minutes): ₹15,793 (~5,500 THB or ~$163.82) on AirAsia or Lao Airlines, or ₹5,169 (~1,800 THB or ~$53.62) for a sleeper bus to Chiang Mai and then a budget flight from Chiang Mai. See our how to get to Luang Prabang guide for every route into the city.

This version runs ₹30,000-₹35,000 (~$311.19-$363.06) in transport alone. Add accommodation and food and you are looking at ₹60,000-₹70,000 (~$622.38-$726.11) for the 2 weeks, which is roughly the same as the cheap version once you count the Huế and Hội An hotel nights the cheap version skips.

Option 3: Fastest (Fly the Long Legs, ~₹28,000 (~$290.45))

If you have exactly 14 days and 0 flexibility, the math is simple: fly the long hops, ground-transport the short ones.

  • Hanoi to Vientiane (1 hour 50 minutes): ~₹7,712 (~80 USD) on VietJet or Lao Airlines (flight, replacing the land leg in Option 1)
  • Vientiane to Bangkok (1 hour 15 minutes): ~₹6,748 (~70 USD) on AirAsia, Thai Smile, or Lao Airlines
  • Skip Vietnam entirely north of Hội An if time is the constraint

Total flying cost on this skeleton: ₹14,000-₹18,000 (~$145.22-$186.71), plus ground transport for the rest. The flight from Hanoi to Vientiane saves you about 30 hours over the bus route and costs ₹15,000 (~$155.60) more. For a 2-week trip that math works. For a 3-week trip it does not.

Honest take: If you can afford the flight, fly Hanoi to Vientiane. If you can afford the slow boat, take the slow boat. The middle ground (buses the whole way) is only worth it if you are on a tight ₹25,000 (~$259.33) budget for the whole corridor.

Border Crossing: Nam Phao / Cau Treo (Vietnam → Laos)

This is the border most Indian backpackers use on this route. It is not the prettiest crossing (the road on the Laos side is rough for the first 50 km) but it is the most direct from Hanoi.

Step by step for an Indian passport holder:

  1. Vietnam exit stamp at Cau Treo. Your bus drops you 1 km before the actual border post. Walk or take a xe om for ₹37 (~10,000 VND or ~$0.38). Queue at the Vietnam immigration counter, get your exit stamp. Should take 15–25 minutes.
  2. Walk the no-man’s-land. About 200 metres. There are porters offering to carry bags for ₹74 (~20,000 VND or ~$0.76). You do not need them.
  3. Lao visa on arrival at Nam Phao. Counter on the left as you enter. Fill the form, hand over your passport + one passport photo + ₹3,470 (~36 USD). They give you a receipt, you walk 50 metres to the next window, they hand you the visa. Total: 30–45 minutes if there is no queue.
  4. Lao immigration entry stamp. Same building, different window. They stamp you in. Done.

Currency exchange: Bad rates at the border. Better to withdraw LAK from an ATM in Thakhek or Vientiane. If you must change at the border, change only ₹1,928 (~20 USD) to cover the songthaew to Thakhek.

Scams to watch:

  • “You need a vaccine certificate”, you do not. Ignore anyone telling you this.
  • “Visa fee is higher”, ignore upsell attempts; the official rate is ₹3,470 (~36 USD). Hold your ground.
  • Drivers who insist your bus left without you. It did not. They want to put you on their private tuk-tuk for 4× the price.

Operating hours: 07:00–19:00 Vietnam time, daily. Do not arrive after 17:00. The last bus from Vinh to the border leaves at 13:00.

Indian Passport Specifics

Vietnam and Laos both offer Indian passport holders visa on arrival at this border. The fees above are accurate as of mid-2026, verified against the Lao Immigration Department website. Thailand grants visa-free entry to Indian passport holders for 60 days under the bilateral agreement, so the Thai end of the trip costs you nothing in visa fees.

Documents to carry beyond your passport:

  • Two passport photos (one for Lao visa, one spare)
  • Printed hotel bookings for first 2 nights in each country (border agents occasionally ask, especially in Laos)
  • USD ₹4,820-₹9,640 (~50-100 USD) in cash for emergencies (ATMs work in cities, fail on rural border roads)
  • A printed copy of your return flight from Bangkok (Thailand immigration may ask)

Indian embassy contacts if things go sideways:

Before departure, check the MEA travel advisory at mea.gov.in for any active advisories on the specific provinces you are crossing through (especially Xaisomboun in Laos and parts of the Lao. Thai border near the Golden Triangle).

When NOT to Take This Route

June to early September (monsoon). The Vinh → Cau Treo road has had landslides in past monsoon seasons. The Mekong slow boat route from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang cancels runs when the river runs high. If you are travelling in July or August, either fly the long legs or wait until October.

Late December to mid-February (northern Vietnam cold + Laos burning season). The temperature in northern Vietnam drops to 8–12°C at night in December and January, which is colder than some Indian travellers expect. Worse, the agricultural burning season in northern Laos (February to April) puts the air quality in Luang Prabang and Vientiane at AQI 200+, which is genuinely bad for your lungs.

Best months: October, November, and March to early May. You get dry roads, manageable heat, and clear Mekong views.

Sample 14-Night Itinerary

1–3HanoiOld Quarter, train street, day trip to Ninh Binh
4Night bus to VinhSleep on the bus
5Vinh → border → ThakhekBorder crossing day, stay in Thakhek
6Thakhek → VientianeSleeper bus overnight

10–11BangkokGrand Palace, Chatuchak, Chinatown
12Night train to Chiang Mai13 hours, sleeper

This version skips Luang Prabang entirely. If Luang Prabang is non-negotiable for you, swap days 7–8 with: Vientiane → Vientiane flight to Luang Prabang (45 min, ~₹8,676 (~90 USD)) → 2 nights Luang Prabang → fly Luang Prabang → Chiang Mai (1 hour, ~₹7,712 (~80 USD)) → sleeper to Bangkok → 1 night Bangkok. That fits in 14 days if you skip the Vientiane nights entirely. Or you can do this version in 16 days by keeping the Vientiane nights.

Getting Connected

SIM coverage is solid in cities (Vietnam Viettel, Laos Unitel, Thailand AIS/AIS 5G) but drops to 2G or nothing for 60–80 km stretches of road between Vinh and the Lao border, and again on the Vientiane → Nong Khai railway. Download offline Google Maps for the Vinh → Thakhek → Vientiane corridor before you leave Hanoi.

For a hassle-free option that covers all three countries on one eSIM, Get Nomad eSIM is the easiest setup. If you prefer local SIMs: in Laos, buy a Unitel SIM at the Thakhek bus station on arrival (~₹172 for 10 GB, 7 days); in Thailand, grab an AIS tourist SIM at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (~₹859 for 30 GB, 15 days).

FAQ

How much cash should I carry for the border crossing? At least ₹4,820 (~50 USD) in clean, unmarked USD bills for the Lao visa fee plus the songthaew to Thakhek. ATMS do not work at the border.

Is the overnight train from Vientiane to Bangkok safe for solo Indian travellers? Yes. The Bangkok. Nong Khai sleeper is one of the safest and most popular routes in the region. Berths are gender-separated. Lock your bag to the luggage rack and you will be fine.

Can I do this trip in reverse (Bangkok → Vietnam in 2 weeks)? Yes, and it is arguably easier because the sleeper train is the last leg, not a middle leg, and you do not arrive in Vietnam exhausted. Same distances, same costs.

Do I need a visa for Vietnam?

Is the slow boat from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang worth it on a tight 2-week timeline? Only if you cut Vientiane. The boat takes 2 days, costs ~₹518 (~120,000 LAK or ~$5.37), and is genuinely beautiful, but it eats 2 nights you do not have.

Can I use UPI in any of these countries? UPI works at some big merchants in Bangkok, is limited in Hanoi, spotty in Luang Prabang, and almost nowhere in Vientiane or rural Laos. Carry cash.

What is the single best day of this whole route? Day 9, the Vientiane to Bangkok sleeper train, crossing the Mekong at Nong Khai just after sunrise. Book a window berth on the left side.

Subodh’s Take

If this is your first multi-country SEA trip, do not try to be a hero. Take the cheap version, eat at markets, sleep in dorms, and use the savings for two extra nights in Hội An. The romance of the slow boat is real but only worth it on your second loop. First time, finish the corridor in one piece and with money left for Bangkok. That is the win condition.
