Thailand to Singapore in 2 Weeks: The Malay Peninsula Route for Indian Backpackers

This Thailand Malaysia Singapore itinerary 2 weeks route covers Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Penang, Kuala Lumpur, and Singapore in 14 days for Indian backpackers.

✅ Last verified on-the-ground: July 2026

Subodh’s Pro Tip: Skip Phuket and Krabi on this itinerary. They eat 3 to 4 days of travel time that you will not get back. The Malay Peninsula corridor rewards movement, not beach stopovers. For related planning, see our guides on Sea Backpacking Hub and Bangkok to Chiang Mai.

📍 Distance: 1,850 km corridor, Bangkok to Singapore overland via Malaysia ⏱️ Fastest option: 4 to 5 days (Skip Malaysia stops, fly segments) 💰 Cheapest option: ₹28,600 (~$296.87) for 14 days on the ground (hostels, street food, buses) ✅ Best option: 14 days, Bangkok → Chiang Mai → Penang → Kuala Lumpur → Singapore

Why this Thailand Malaysia Singapore itinerary 2 weeks route works for Indian backpackers:

This route is the most common Southeast Asia corridor Indian backpackers ask me about. The route is well-trodden, visas are visa-free or visa-on-arrival for Indians in 2026, and the overland borders are manageable. The hard part is fitting three countries into fourteen days without burning out in transit.

This plan keeps Thailand at the front end (more time, slower pace), cuts Malaysia to two anchor cities (Penang and KL), and ends in Singapore for 2 nights before flying home. The Thai Baht runs at 1 THB ≈ ₹2.87, the Malaysian Ringgit at 1 MYR ≈ ₹23.59, and the Singapore Dollar at 1 SGD ≈ ₹74.76 at current rates. You will need all three in hand or on a forex card by day 8.

Border note for 2026: Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore all allow Indian passport holders visa-free entry for short stays. Thailand and Malaysia grant 30 days, Singapore grants 30 days as well under current bilateral arrangements. Confirm on the MEA travel advisory before you fly, since these windows do shift without warning.

Day 1 to 2: Bangkok

Land at Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang, take the Airport Rail Link or a Grab into the Khao San area. Bangkok is not the highlight of this trip. It is the entry tax. Spend day 1 recovering from the flight. Day 2 is for the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, and a Chao Phraya ferry ride. Street food dinner along Yaowarat Road runs ₹172-₹286 (~60-100 THB or ~$1.78-$2.97) per dish.

SpendCost
Dorm bed (Khao San area)₹1,001-₹1,715 (~350-600 THB or ~$10.39-$17.81)
Grand Palace entry₹1,429 (~500 THB or ~$14.84)
Street food meal₹172-₹343 (~60-120 THB or ~$1.78-$3.56)
BTS/MRT day pass₹400 (~140 THB or ~$4.15)

I cover Bangkok logistics in detail on our Sea Backpacking Hub. Skip the tuk-tup rides from any hotel tout, use Grab instead anywhere outside the BTS corridor.

Day 3 to 5: Chiang Mai (Bangkok → Chiang Mai)

The northern Thailand segment is where this trip earns its keep. The overnight train from Bangkok Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal to Chiang Mai (SRT sleeper, 2nd class a/c, 14 to 15 hours) is one of the cheapest long-distance train experiences in Asia. Tickets run ₹3,053 (~1,068 THB or ~$31.69) for a lower berth and you wake up at Chiang Mai railway station, a short songthaew ride from the Old City. See Chiang Mai arrival logistics on 12go.

SpendCost
Bangkok → Chiang Mai sleeper train₹3,053 (~1,068 THB or ~$31.69)
Dorm bed (Old City)₹715-₹1,287 (~250-450 THB or ~$7.42-$13.35)
Songkhwae / Sunday Walking Street meal₹229-₹572 (~80-200 THB or ~$2.37-$5.94)
Doi Suthep songthaew return₹286 (~100 THB or ~$2.97)

Three days for Chiang Mai is the right number. One for the Old City temples (Wat Chedi Luang, Wat Phra Singh), one for Doi Suthep and a cooking school, and one for either an elephant sanctuary (ethical only, no riding) or a Chiang Dao day trip north. If you want a quieter northern option, the Chiang Dao caves and hot springs work as a full-day swap for Doi Suthep.

Safety Alert: Chiang Mai songthaew drivers quote ₹572 (~200 THB or ~$5.94) per person to Doi Suthep from the Old City. That is correct. If anyone quotes ₹1,429 (~500 THB or ~$14.84), walk away and flag the next songthaew.

Day 6: Transit Day Back to Bangkok + South to Malaysia

Two real options here, and your choice defines the rest of the trip:

  • Option A (the fast way): Fly Chiang Mai to Bangkok Don Mueang (AirAsia, ₹2,287-₹3,431 (~800-1,200 THB or ~$23.74-$35.61), 1h), arrive by midday, rest at a hostel near Krung Thep Aphiwat, then board the overnight train south to Hat Yai that evening.
  • Option B (the slow way): Sleeper train from Chiang Mai back to Bangkok (₹3,053 (~1,068 THB or ~$31.69), 14h), arriving early morning. Spend the day in Bangkok, then take the overnight train south to Hat Yai that evening.

For a 14-day trip covering three countries, I run Option A for most travellers. You lose one Chiang Mai day and gain one Malaysia day. The math works.

On day 6 evening, board the overnight train from Bangkok to Hat Yai (SRT International Express, 2nd class a/c sleeper, ~18 hours, ₹4,254 (~1,488 THB or ~$44.16) lower berth). You cross the Thai-Malaysian border at Padang Besar around 4am. Indian passport holders do not need to leave the train. The Malaysian immigration officer walks through the carriages stamping passports. From Hat Yai, connect to Butterworth by morning train (~4 hours) or bus (~5 hours) to reach Penang.

Day 7 to 8: Penang (Butterworth → George Town)

The Butterworth station is across the channel from George Town. Take a 20-minute Rapid Ferry across Penang Channel (₹47 (~2 MYR or ~$0.49)), drop your bag at a hostel near Chulia Street, and start eating.

Penang is the food capital of Malaysia, and for Indian backpackers it is the easiest city in the region to eat vegetarian. The Little India area on Queen Street and Lebuh Chulia has banana leaf meals, dosas, and thali sets from ₹283-₹424 (~12-18 MYR or ~$2.93-$4.40) per plate. This is also where your camera roll fills up, the George Town UNESCO zone has more Peranakan shophouse architecture per square meter than anywhere else in Southeast Asia.

SpendCost
Penang ferry (Butterworth → George Town)₹47 (~2 MYR or ~$0.49)
Dorm bed (Chulia Street)₹825-₹1,296 (~35-55 MYR or ~$8.56-$13.45)
Indian vegetarian thali₹283-₹424 (~12-18 MYR or ~$2.93-$4.40)
Hawker centre meal (Assam Laksa, Char Kway Teow)₹188-₹330 (~8-14 MYR or ~$1.96-$3.42)

Walk Little India, Penang Hill, Kek Lok Si temple, and the Clan Jetties on day 7. Day 8 morning, catch the bus to Kuala Lumpur from Penang Sentral, 5 hours direct, ₹825 (~35 MYR or ~$8.56), with stops at Ipoh and tapah. Compare bus options on 12go.

Day 9 to 11: Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur gets a bad rap from backpackers who treat it as a transit hub. Three days here is enough to see the Petronas Towers at sunset, eat your way through Jalan Alor, and do a half-day Batu Caves + Genting Highlands loop. KL is also where you do your laundry, restock toiletries, and buy any electronics you forgot. Travellers report that Bukit Bintang has the best pharmacy prices for personal care in the region.

SpendCost
Bus Penang → KL (direct, 5h)₹825-₹1,178 (~35-50 MYR or ~$8.56-$12.23)
Dorm bed (Bukit Bintang / Chinatown)₹1,060-₹1,885 (~45-80 MYR or ~$11.01-$19.57)
Petronas Towers Skybridge ticket₹2,309 (~98 MYR or ~$23.97)
Street meal (Jalan Alor satay, char kuey teow)₹188-₹353 (~8-15 MYR or ~$1.96-$3.67)
Batu Caves + KL train day₹188 (~8 MYR or ~$1.96) return

Indian food in KL is genuinely good, not the watered-down diaspora version. Common options in Brickfields (Little India KL) include banana leaf meals starting around ₹283 (~12 MYR or ~$2.93). Masjid India has hawker stalls doing murtabak and roti canai for under ₹118 (~5 MYR or ~$1.22). Indian meal options near Bukit Bintang include a range of vegetarian and non-vegetarian restaurants across the usual price tiers.

Safety Alert: Pickpockets in Bukit Bintang night market are a real risk during peak season. Use a front-pocket wallet or a zip pouch worn inside the shirt. Phone snatches from motorbike riders do happen on the edges of Chinatown, near Petaling Street after 11pm. Stay alert or take a Grab back to the hostel.

Day 11 night: take the overnight bus from KL to Singapore. The direct KL → Singapore express (Aeroline, KKKL, or Causeway Link) runs 5 to 6 hours and costs ₹1,178-₹1,767 (~50-75 MYR or ~$12.23-$18.34) depending on the operator. You arrive at Queen Street Terminal in Singapore and are ready to start day 12 sightseeing.

Day 12 to 13: Singapore

Singapore is the most expensive city you step into on this entire trip, and the only place in the corridor where street food is genuinely subsidised. The hawker centres are subsidized by the government, meals run ₹298-₹448 (~4-6 SGD or ~$3.10-$4.65) at Maxwell, Lau Pa Sat, or Chinatown Complex. A chicken rice plate is ₹298 (~4 SGD or ~$3.10). A teh tarik is ₹112 (~1.50 SGD or ~$1.16). This is your food budget to enjoy, not fear.

For hostels, the legal budget stays close to ₹2,238 (~30 SGD or ~$23.23) per night in a 10-bed dorm, slightly cheaper outside the CBD in Lavender or Little India. Search and compare backpacker dorms in Singapore here:

HostelRatingLocationBook
Dream Lodge @ Tyrwhitt9.2Lavender, 5 min to MRTCheck prices
Atelier Hostel9.08Jalan Besar, MRT accessCheck prices
These are the two highest-rated backpacker dorms in the city and they are not in the Marina Bay premium zone. The Lavender and Jalan Besar locations save ₹1,492-₹2,238 (~20-30 SGD or ~$15.48-$23.23) per night over anything near the Merlion.

Day 12: Merlion Park in the morning (free, 30 minutes is enough), Gardens by the Bay afternoon (₹2,089 (~28 SGD or ~$21.68) for the conservatories, or free outdoor Skyway), Check Merlion Park tours on GetYourGuide. Day 13: Singapore Flyer at sunset (₹2,461 (~33 SGD or ~$25.55) for the standard capsule), or skip the paid observation deck and go up Marina Bay Sands SkyPark for less on a weekday. The Singapore Flyer still beats MBS for clean views and shorter queues.

For a single evening that hits the three signature Singapore experiences back-to-back, the river cruise + light shows combination is the easiest plan. Check Singapore river cruise and light show tours on GetYourGuide.

Where to Eat in Singapore (Veg / Indian)

The Indian food scene here is a step above everywhere else on the route. For a real Hyderabadi biryani, Chola Cafe - Biryani House (Tekka Market) is your spot. Chicken and mutton biryani both come on the dum, prices run ₹1,343-₹2,089 (~18-28 SGD or ~$13.94-$21.68) per plate. Vegetarians should order the paneer biryani, which they do properly here, not as an afterthought.

For a casual evening pint after two weeks of buses and trains, Ming’s Cafe & Pub on Tyrwhitt Road sits a 5-minute walk from Dream Lodge. Local craft beers on tap, decent pub food, and a quieter alternative to the Geylang bar strips if you have an early flight the next morning.

Best Transport Options Between Countries

Bangkok → Penang (Train + Connect)

The SRT International Express sleeper from Bangkok Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal to Hat Yai runs once daily, ₹4,254 (~1,488 THB or ~$44.16) lower berth, ~18 hours, crossing the Thai-Malaysian border at Padang Besar around 4am. Indian passport holders stay on the train through the border. From Hat Yai, connect to Butterworth by morning train (~4 hours) or bus (~5 hours) to reach Penang. Book 2 to 3 weeks ahead on the SRT website, lower berths sell out first.

Bangkok → Kuala Lumpur (Fly + Bus)

Bangkok Don Mueang to Kuala Lumpur KLIA2 on AirAsia, ₹2,287-₹5,146 (~800-1,800 THB or ~$23.74-$53.42), 2 hours including the airport shuffle. From KLIA2, the KLIA Ekspres train into the city is ₹118 (~5 MYR or ~$1.22), 35 minutes. Total door-to-door for this segment is around 6 hours including immigration, versus 30+ for the all-rail version. Best option when you are short on days.

Kuala Lumpur → Singapore (Bus)

KKKL, Aeroline, or Causeway Link express buses from KL Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS) to Queen Street, Singapore. ₹1,178-₹1,767 (~50-75 MYR or ~$12.23-$18.34), 5 to 6 hours, drops you at a major MRT station. The bus is half the price of the ETS KTM train + taxi option and runs throughout the day.

When NOT to Take This Route

  • June to October: Southern Thailand and Malaysia east coast see monsoon flooding. Penang and Langkawi ferries get cancelled, roads in southern Thailand flood, and the Bangkok → Hat Yai sleeper train has had delays running into 8+ hours.
  • December to January: Singapore hotel prices double for the F1 night race and Chinese New Year overflow. Book hostels 2 months out and lock them now.
  • Ramadan in Malaysia: Most Malay-owned restaurants close during daylight hours. Indian and Chinese spots stay open, but hawker stalls in Malay-majority areas go dark.

The safe months are February to April and September to early November. The May to June window is shoulder season and works well, with lower prices and fewer tourists.

Getting Connected

Thailand: AIS tourist SIM at the airport counter runs ₹855 (~299 THB or ~$8.87) for 8 days;7-Eleven stocks the same AIS SIM for around ₹798 (~279 THB). Malaysia: Hotlink or Celcom prepaid, ₹707 (~30 MYR or ~$7.34) for 30 days, 50 GB. Singapore: Singtel tourist SIM, ₹895 (~12 SGD or ~$9.29) for 7 days, 100 GB.

If you have an eSIM-compatible phone and want zero airport counter time, a Nomad regional data plan covers all three of Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore for ₹1,830 (~19 USD), valid 30 days.

SafetyWing note: The whole corridor is fine for travellers, but medical evacuation from a Penang or Langkawi accident back to Singapore or Bangkok costs 6 figures in USD. Get proper insurance before you fly.

FAQ

Can I do this trip in 10 days instead of 14? Yes. Drop either Chiang Mai or the Penang stay. The 10-day version works as Bangkok → Chiang Mai → Bangkok → fly to KL → bus to Singapore. Singapore becomes 1 night only.

Is the Bangkok to Hat Yai sleeper train safe? Yes. There is a conductor in every carriage, locked doors at the border crossing, and lower berths include bedding. Solo female travellers report no issues, but keep the passport on your person, not in the luggage rack.

Do I need cash for the Thai-Malaysian border? A little. The Padang Besar border has money changers on both sides, but rates are 1 to 2 percent worse than city changers. Change ₹1,429-₹2,859 (~500-1,000 THB or ~$14.84-$29.68) to MYR at the border or, better, just withdraw MYR from the first ATM in Butterworth using a forex card.

Is Kuala Lumpur safe to walk around at night? Mostly. Bukit Bintang, Chinatown, and KLCC are fine. Avoid Jalan Petaling after 11pm, which is where the bulk of pickpocket reports cluster. Use Grab after 10pm outside your hostel area.

What’s the cheapest flight back to India from Singapore? Changi to major Indian metros runs ₹14,000-₹22,000 (~$145.32-$228.36) round trip on Air India Express, IndiGo, or Scoot. One-way is rarely cheaper than round trip because of how Indian aviation tax is structured.

Can I extend in Thailand beyond 30 days? Yes, visa extension at Thai immigration in Bangkok or Chiang Mai is ₹5,432 (~1,900 THB or ~$56.38) and gives 30 additional days. One extension only, then you must do a visa run.

Subodh’s Take

This corridor works because the geography is linear. You do not backtrack. The Thailand Malaysia Singapore itinerary in 2 weeks is the right shape for a first Southeast Asia trip: short enough that it does not derail, long enough that you feel like you crossed three countries instead of skimming four airports. The single biggest mistake I see is people over-investing in Singapore. Two nights is enough. The rest of your time and money is better spent in Chiang Mai and Penang, where the experience per rupee is three or four times higher.
