Hanoi
The northern capital and the city every Vietnam trip should start in. Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)
The southern counterweight: wider boulevards, more English, more rooftop bars, more traffic. Used to be called Saigon and still feels it. Day trip to the Cu Chi tunnels, night out in District 1, and a Mekong Delta loop if you have time. Comparable dorm prices to Hanoi for similar quality.
Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh
These are two different places doing the same thing, limestone karsts rising out of water, and you’ll pick one based on time and budget. Ha Long means a day or overnight cruise (₹2,500-₹8,000 (~$25.90-$82.88)); Ninh Binh means a ₹736 (~200,000 VND or ~$7.63) boat ride through Tam Coc or Trang An. Sapa
Trekking country in the far northwest. Rice terraces, misty mornings, homestays with H’mong and Dao families. Sapa is colder than the rest of Vietnam, has fewer dorm beds than hostels expect (₹600-₹1,500 (~$6.22-$15.54) a night), and the tours are well-worn paths, book a 2D/1N trek and skip the cable car.
Hue
The old imperial capital between Hanoi and Hoi An. Citadel, royal tombs, the famous Perfume River, and a massive backpacker motorbike route over the Hai Van Pass to Da Nang (the Hue to Hoi An motorbike route is on most Indians’ lists). Two days is enough unless you’re cycling the DMZ.
Da Nang

Hoi An
Lanterns, tailors, cooking classes, and the beach. Hoi An is the city Indian travellers spend the most in because of the tailoring scene, a full custom suit runs ₹3,000-₹5,000 (~$31.08-$51.80). The Old Town is small but you’ll stay longer than planned because the food (cao lau, white rose dumplings, banh mi) is unreasonably good.
Dalat

Getting Around Vietnam
Vietnam is long and thin: Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh is ~1,700 km by road, broadly comparable to Delhi to Bangalore (~1,740-2,000 km). The three ways to move between cities are sleeper buses, trains, and short flights. Sleeper buses are the cheapest and cover every backpacker route (Hanoi to Sapa, Hanoi to Hoi An, Hoi An to Dalat). Getting There from India
Direct flights from Delhi and Mumbai to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City run on Vietnam Airlines, VietJet, and IndiGo (codeshare). Round trip from Delhi to Hanoi is ₹18,000-₹28,000 (~$186.47-$290.07) on a sale fare, ₹32,000-₹45,000 (~$331.51-$466.18) at full price. Mumbai is similar. Bangalore has fewer direct flights and usually needs a stop in Bangkok or Singapore.
Total flight time is 5-7 hours direct, longer with layovers. Most travellers fly into Hanoi and out of HCMC (vice versa) to avoid backtracking.

When to Go
Vietnam is not one climate, it’s three. The north (Hanoi, Sapa, Ha Long) has a clear winter (Nov-Mar, can be 10°C and foggy in Sapa) and a clear summer (May-Sep, hot and wet). Central Vietnam (Hue, Da Nang, Hoi An) has a typhoon season in Jul-Sep that floods Hoi An and closes beaches. The south (HCMC, Mekong, Phu Quoc) is dry Nov-Apr and wet May-Oct.
The sweet spot for a Hanoi-to-HCMC north-to-south trip is February to April: dry across all three regions, temperatures reasonable, Tet (Lunar New Year) chaos over by mid-February.

Common Mistakes
- Overbooking Hanoi at 5 days and starving Hoi An of 1. Hoi An needs 3 full days if you’re going to tailor, take a cooking class, and do the beach. Hanoi can survive on 3.

- Carrying USD cash and changing on the street. Street money-changers in Hanoi and HCMC run short-change scams on ₹500,000-₹1,000,000 (~$5,179.80-$10,359.59) notes. If you only have 10 days, do Hanoi (3) → Ha Long or Ninh Binh (2) → fly to Hoi An (3) → fly out from Da Nang. Skip Hue, skip Dalat, skip Sapa on a short trip, they’re great but they cost you a travel day each and you can’t undo that. If you have 14 days, add Hue via the Hai Van motorbike pass. If you have 21 days, add Sapa for the trekking. Vietnam rewards slow travel but it punishes over-planning.
