Luang Prabang

The UNESCO heritage town most Indian travellers end up spending four nights in, and the right place to start if you want temples without effort. Mornings are the alms-giving ceremony (join respectfully from the far side of the street), afternoons are Kuang Si Falls, evenings are the night market on the main road. Vientiane

Laos’ small, slow capital, mostly useful as an entry or exit point rather than a destination in itself. The Patuxai viewpoint costs roughly ₹13 (~3,000 LAK or ~$0.13), which is the most visible thing to do. Getting There from India

There are no direct India to Laos flights. Every routing involves a connection in Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Hanoi, or Singapore. The cheapest and most common option for Indian backpackers is a round trip to Bangkok on Air India, IndiGo, or Thai Airways (Delhi and Mumbai), then either a Bangkok to Vientiane flight on Lao Airlines or Thai Smile (₹6,000-₹12,000 (~$62.16-$124.32) one way), or a first-class train ticket from Bangkok to Nong Khai and a slow border crossing into Vientiane (~₹1,200 total for the train + visa).

Total one-way travel time from Delhi to Vientiane runs 9 to 14 hours including the connection. Mumbai and Bangalore see similar numbers. Budget a full travel day either side of your Laos arrival.

Laos has three seasons. The cool dry season from November to February is the window most Indian travellers target: temperatures sit at 15 to 25°C in Luang Prabang, the rivers are calm enough for the slow boat, and the night markets are full. March to May is hot (35°C+) and humid. June to October is the wet season with heavy afternoon rain and occasional road closures in the Bolaven Plateau.

Common Mistakes

  1. Trying to do Laos in 4 days. The slow boat alone eats two of them. Plan at least 7 days, ideally 14, and don’t try to combine Laos with Cambodia in the same short trip.
  2. Counting days backward from the 30-day visa stamp. The visa is issued at arrival, so if you’re landing at Bangkok first and entering Laos on day 5, you still only have 30 days from the Laos border stamp. Extensions cost ₹193 (~2 USD) per day at Vientiane immigration (read the extension guide).
  3. Carrying Thai baht instead of USD for the visa fee. VoA counters technically accept THB but they give bad rates and sometimes refuse. Carry clean ₹2,896 (~30 USD) notes (no tears, no marks).
  4. Skipping Vientiane entirely. It’s tempting to skip the capital, but it’s where the best Indian food, the best ATMs, and the most reliable transport options sit.

Laos is the part of the SE Asia loop that rewards travellers who can sit still. If you try to compress it into three or four days, you’ll spend the whole trip on minivans and finish the country tired. If you give it two weeks and slow down for the slow boat, Nong Khiaw, and a night at the Luang Prabang night market, you’ll leave with one of the better memories of the loop. Skip the south entirely if you’re short on time, the Bolaven Plateau and 4000 Islands are good but optional add-ons. Skip Vientiane almost entirely if you’re flying in and out of Luang Prabang. And book the slow boat first, everything else plans around it.
